A former Uber driver, Jonathan Rinderknecht, was indicted on federal charges for allegedly starting California’s devastating Palisades Fire, which ravaged homes and businesses in the Pacific Palisades area. Prosecutors suggest that Rinderknecht, now 30 years old, acted out of frustration with his life and societal issues, as detailed in a recently filed court memorandum.

The incident occurred on January 1, 2025, when Rinderknecht is accused of using a lighter to ignite combustible materials. This act led to the escalation of a fire that became known as both the Lachman and Palisades Fires, which caused substantial destruction across the Los Angeles neighbourhood. Thousands of homes and commercial properties were destroyed as a result of the blaze.
In a trial memo dated April 29, 2025, prosecutors elaborated on Rinderknecht’s mental state leading up to the incident. They claim he had grown increasingly frustrated with his circumstances, particularly following disappointment regarding personal relationships. The memo indicates that he was particularly upset about a lack of companionship on New Year’s Eve.
Additionally, it has been alleged that Rinderknecht harboured an obsession with murder suspect Luigi Mangione, who stands accused of the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024. Mangione’s case generated considerable public interest, with some viewing him as a “modern-day Robin Hood” in light of his apparent motivations against corporate greed.
Investigators noted that Rinderknecht had conducted online research in December 2024, seeking content associated with Mangione and anti-wealth sentiment by searching phrases such as “free Luigi Mangione” and “let’s take down all the billionaires.” On January 3, just a couple of days before the fire was ignited, he allegedly took a screenshot of an article detailing Mangione’s not guilty plea.
On the night of December 31, 2024, and into January 1, Rinderknecht was actively working as an Uber driver. Passengers have reported that he exhibited signs of agitation and erratic behaviour during that period, verbally expressing his displeasure with capitalism, law enforcement, and even with Mangione. The filings suggest that when questioned about the possible motivations for setting fire to the Pacific Palisades, he equated such a desperate act to the alleged murder committed by Mangione, driven by a sense of oppression from the wealthy.
Rinderknecht was formally indicted in October 2025 on multiple charges, including one count of destruction of property by fire, one count of arson affecting property in interstate commerce, and one count of burning timber. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing, with his attorney, Steve Haney, expressing confidence that Rinderknecht will clear his name in court.
The trial is scheduled to commence on June 8, 2026. Prosecutors anticipate it will last between seven to ten days and aim to present testimony from approximately 40 to 50 witnesses.
As the case unfolds, it serves as a poignant reminder of the deep societal and personal frustrations that can drive individuals to extreme actions.
