The couple, both aged 55, tied the knot on April 6 in a unique underwater ceremony off the coast of Cap Malheureux.

The couple’s shared love for diving became the inspiration for their decision to elope in such a distinctive setting. Blumenthal noted, “After 12 years of diving together, it seemed like the perfect way to get married.” For them, the ocean serves not just as a backdrop, but as their “happy place,” where their relationship blossomed.
Blumenthal and Buurveld first met through mutual acquaintances, cultivating their bond around their passion for diving. Three years ago, the couple relocated from Europe to Bali, seeking to immerse themselves in their passion for the underwater world and spend even more time together exploring the depths of the ocean.
When it came time to formalise their commitment, the couple opted for an intimate setting, free from the traditional fanfare of weddings. They conducted preliminary vows and completed the necessary paperwork aboard a boat before diving to their chosen location on the ocean floor. There, a charming altar crafted from palm leaves and adorned with white flowers awaited them, along with a bucket of celebratory drinks to mark the occasion.
In a delightful twist on typical wedding attire, both Blumenthal and Buurveld chose to remain barefoot and in their formal clothing, forgoing traditional wetsuits. Blumenthal gracefully descended towards her partner while wearing her wedding gown, complete with a bouquet of yellow and white plumeria flowers. For Buurveld, witnessing his bride approach was the highlight of the ceremony.
Blumenthal shared that while the experience was exhilarating, there were some challenges. “It felt very special but it was a bit awkward to go in the water without fins,” she explained. To ensure her gown did not float away, small weights were sewn into it, while she wore a weight belt and ankle weights. This attention to detail allowed her to maintain her elegant look even underwater.
Once settled on the sandy ocean bed, the couple exchanged vows again, using laminated paper to keep them dry. They signalled their agreement with the established scuba “OK” hand gesture, a gesture that mirrored the couple’s significant bond. The rings they exchanged were also thoughtfully kept in a seashell, adding to the charm of the underwater nuptials.
Following the exchange of vows and rings, the couple shared their first kiss as a married pair, completing their enchanting ceremony with an underwater dance, the setting undeniably amplifying the romance of the moment. The duo even shared the air from the tank Buurveld carried, which Blumenthal described as a poignant symbol of their union.
Planning the extraordinary ceremony was orchestrated by Julia Thell of Happily Forever, with key moments captured by photographer Andy Michel of Ido Productions, and the event filmed by Emperator Diving Center in Mauritius.
After concluding their one-of-a-kind celebration, the couple excitedly informed their family and friends of their marriage. “Everyone was very happy for us and thought it made total sense,” the newlyweds reflected.
