Authorities in Florida are investigating a troubling incident in which hundreds of toxic mothballs were found scattered across St. Pete Beach, just ahead of the nesting season for the threatened black skimmer birds. The discovery of the mothballs was made on April 20, when a call was received by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) regarding the toxic substances located near a condominiums on the beach. Brian Ferguson, a senior wildlife officer and lead investigator on the case, suggested that the mothballs were likely spread with the intention of deterring the black skimmers from nesting on the beach.
