New York Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler is gearing up for what promises to be a daunting challenge as he prepares to make his first appearance at the iconic Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox. Schlittler, who hails from Walpole, Massachusetts, has garnered considerable attention not only for his prowess on the mound but also for the unwarranted hostility he has faced from die-hard Red Sox fans, particularly since becoming a member of the rival Yankees.

In a couple of recent interviews, the 25-year-old shared his experiences regarding the trolling he has encountered, which has included hateful messages and even death threats directed at him and his family. “That’s kind of what I expect,” he remarked, reflecting on the intense rivalry between the two teams and the fervour of the local fanbase.

Growing up a short distance from Boston, Schlittler was once a part of the Red Sox’s extended community before being picked in the seventh round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Yankees. He recognised that while most fans are fairly indifferent, a small segment of supporters display an unhealthy obsession with the rivalries. “It’s just those diehards that really care about this, and the fact that I play for the Yankees makes it worse for them,” he stated.
With the momentous matchup scheduled for Thursday, April 23, Schlittler anticipates a fierce atmosphere, especially considering the reception he has already received from passionate Red Sox supporters. He commented on the expected intensity, saying, “It’s gonna be loud. They’re gonna probably have guys my age or slightly younger, sitting right outside the [visiting] bullpen, yelling whatever, probably throwing stuff at me, trying to grab me.”
This isn’t the pitcher’s first experience facing the Red Sox, however. His previous encounter as a Yankee resulted in a solid performance where he recorded a victory in the postseason. In Game 3 of the 2025 American League Wild Card Series, he achieved significant recognition for having the most strikeouts by a Yankees rookie in a playoff game, securing a convincing 4-0 win against the Sox.
Schlittler reflected on the reactions of the fans post-game, suggesting there might have been expectations of a more respectful reception given his local roots. “You’d think after last time, how much they were talking before, that they might be trying to quiet it down a little bit,” he remarked, indicating that he underestimated the rivalry’s fervent emotions.
The negative attention has only served to fuel Schlittler’s competitive spirit. He stated, “The hate motivated me even more. It just shocked me so much that I was like, ‘OK, I’m trying to dominate.’ I’m going to make sure they hear it back.” The upcoming game has ignited a fire within him, pushing him to channel this animosity into his performance.
Additionally, the pitcher has spoken candidly about the toll that such harassment can take, revealing that his family has also found themselves under scrutiny. After one incident where screenshots of his mother’s private social media settings circulated online, he became acutely aware of the harmful impact of online trolling. “Some of the bigger accounts they got over there, I was able to see, unfortunately,” he disclosed. Despite this, Schlittler attempts to maintain a healthy distance from the negativity. “I don’t really check my phone much before the game, but there was some stuff brought to my attention. Don’t need to give them the attention they’re looking for, but just channel it and make sure I take it in the right way.”
As the countdown to the showdown continues, Schlittler remains resolute and determined. He is not only focused on his performance but also on embracing the thrilling, though challenging atmosphere that Fenway Park is renowned for. “That’s kind of what I expect. So I know the guys are excited for it and I’m excited for it,” he concluded, looking ahead to a game steeped in rivalry and anticipation.
With both excitement and trepidation surrounding his debut at Fenway, it is clear that Schlittler is prepared to face the crowd’s roar—both the supportive cheers from Yankees fans and the inevitable heckling from those in Red Sox colours. This upcoming start will undoubtedly be a defining moment in his career, and one that he is ready to meet head-on.
