In a significant legal battle unfolding in Sydney, actress Charlotte MacInnes has launched a defamation lawsuit against Rebel Wilson, who is best known for her role in the ‘Pitch Perfect’ franchise. The controversy stems from Wilson’s allegations that MacInnes, who featured in Wilson’s directorial film debut ‘The Deb’, had retracted a sexual harassment complaint against a producer in pursuit of career advancement.
The lawsuit, filed by MacInnes against the 46-year-old actress, comes after a series of Instagram posts shared by Wilson in 2024 and 2025. In these posts, Wilson claimed that MacInnes was sexually harassed by Amanda Ghost, a producer on the film, but later withdrew her allegations to secure a record deal and a prominent role in the theatre. During the proceedings at the Sydney court on April 20, MacInnes’s legal representative, barrister Sue Chrysanthou SC, described Wilson’s statements as “malicious concoctions” intended to harm the budding actress’s reputation. She maintained that MacInnes never made such a complaint and emphasized that the allegations undermined her integrity and honesty. MacInnes is seeking damages for the reputational harm this incident has inflicted upon her.
Chrysanthou elaborated on the circumstances surrounding the purported incident, asserting that during production in Bondi, Ghost experienced a medical episode while swimming. She claimed that upon returning to their apartment, MacInnes ran a hot bath for Ghost, where both women, still in their swimsuits, later shared the tub for warmth. The barrister contends that the act has been misrepresented by Wilson, casting not just MacInnes, but also Ghost in a negative and unfounded light.
The case is further complicated by accusations from Chrysanthou that Wilson had allegedly engaged third parties, through a lawyer, to spread anonymous claims regarding Ghost. Wilson has denied this accusation, and her legal team maintains that the actress’s comments should not be deemed defamatory. Defence barrister David Sibtain SC argued that even if Ghost were to have been recovering from a medical incident, any discomfort perceived by MacInnes might not amount to serious reputational damage.
The court proceedings have attracted considerable media attention both for the nature of the allegations and the reputations at stake. Wilson has not only found herself in a legal dispute with MacInnes but is also embroiled in ongoing litigation with the producers of ‘The Deb’.
In July 2024, Amanda Ghost, along with producers Gregor Cameron and Vince Holden, filed a lawsuit against Wilson, alleging that she was seeking credit for work she did not complete concerning the film’s original music. This prompted Wilson to counter-file, asserting that the producers had unnecessarily inflated expenses by about AUD 900,000, which equates to nearly USD 650,000.
Moreover, AI Film, the production company associated with ‘The Deb’, entered the fray with their lawsuit in July 2025, alleging that Wilson intentionally sabotaged the film’s release. Wilson subsequently took to her social media to refute these claims, labelling the lawsuit as nonsensical and unfounded.
Given these interwoven legal disputes, the MacInnes-Wilson trial is expected to extend for approximately nine days, with numerous witnesses likely to testify regarding the truthfulness of the claims made by Wilson. The outcome of the case could significantly impact the careers of the involved parties, particularly as they navigate the challenges of public and industry perception amid the unfolding courtroom drama.
