Toddler Slashed Across Face in Walmart with Large Knife by Alleged Kidnapper Before Police Fatally Shot Suspect

A disturbing incident unfolded at a Walmart in Omaha, Nebraska, on Tuesday, 14 April, where a woman accused of shoplifting allegedly tried to kidnap a three-year-old boy while armed with a knife. The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Noemi Guzman, reportedly took a large kitchen knife from the store before confronting the toddler and his guardian.

Surveillance footage from the shop revealed Guzman approaching the pair in an aisle, brandishing the stolen knife. According to the Omaha Police Department (OPD), she coerced the toddler’s guardian to lead them outside while the boy remained seated in the shopping cart. Witnesses reported that Guzman directed them toward the car park.

At approximately 9:15 a.m., police received an emergency call alerting them to the unsettling situation. The caller described a woman with a large knife who was in the vicinity of the Walmart located at 1606 S 72nd Street. Officers swiftly responded to the scene, arriving shortly after Guzman had exited the store with the child.

Upon entering the car park, officers spotted Guzman, who was pushing the shopping cart containing the boy. The OPD stated that Guzman was making multiple threats while still holding the knife. Authorities shouted commands for her to drop the weapon; however, she refused. In a shocking turn of events, Guzman allegedly slashed the child’s face with the knife during this confrontation.

Faced with an immediate threat to the child’s safety, the officers resorted to using their firearms, fatally striking Guzman. Despite their efforts to provide medical assistance, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The boy’s guardian and a nearby bystander quickly rescued the child from the cart, rendering aid until emergency services arrived.

The young boy was transported to Children’s Hospital by medics from the Omaha Fire Department. Fortunately, his injuries were classified as non-life-threatening. In the wake of this traumatic event, the OPD expressed its condolences to Guzman’s family and friends.

Both officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid critical incident leave in accordance with departmental policy as the matter is investigated further. Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer commended the officers for their professionalism and decisiveness, stating that their actions ultimately protected the child’s life. He reassured the community that local police are prepared to act courageously in critical situations.

Omaha Mayor John W. Ewing Jr. also acknowledged the OPD’s transparency and professionalism in handling the situation. The incident has prompted an investigation led by the OPD Involved Investigations Team, with assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol as well as the Douglas and Sarpy County Sheriff’s Offices.
