Sherrone Moore, the ex-head coach of the Michigan Wolverines football team, has been sentenced following his no contest plea to two misdemeanours: malicious use of a telecommunications device and trespass. The charges stemmed from an incident involving Paige Shiver, a former assistant coach, after she reported an alleged inappropriate relationship to the University administration. Consequently, Moore was terminated from his position in December 2025.

On 14 April 2026, Moore received a sentence of 18 months’ probation along with a fine exceeding £1,000. The ruling came after he pleaded no contest to the charges on 6 March. As part of the conditions of his probation, Moore has been ordered to abstain from both drugs and alcohol, prohibited from having any firearms, and instructed not to contact Shiver.
District Court Judge Cedric Simpson presided over the case and expressed concerns about the impact of Moore’s actions on Shiver’s life. “Frankly, Mr. Moore, you had no right to do what you did. I know she was placed in fear,” he stated, highlighting the traumatic nature of the encounter. Judge Simpson further noted that while he prefers not to sentence individuals to incarceration, he would not hesitate to impose that if any violations of probation were to occur.
Moore faced additional serious charges, including felony home invasion, which could have resulted in a five-year prison sentence if convicted. However, these charges were dismissed as part of a plea agreement reached ahead of the sentencing.
In a poignant statement regarding the sentencing, Shiver expressed her dissatisfaction, asserting that the outcome “does not reflect the harm done to me.” She detailed a traumatic scenario where Moore had allegedly broken into her apartment while exhibiting distressful behaviour, fearing for her life during the ordeal.
Shiver’s legal team previously described her experience as one of “manipulation, harassment, and exploitation” during her time working under Moore, citing a troubling power imbalance within the workplace. “The power imbalance between a powerful head coach and a subordinate employee created an environment where our client felt pressured, intimidated, and unable to escape conduct that should never occur in any workplace,” their statement revealed.
The court session also saw Judge Simpson comment on the emotional strain the situation placed not only on Shiver but also on Moore’s wife, Kelli, who was present in the courtroom. He remarked on her unwavering support for Moore despite the circumstances, suggesting that her loyalty had provided Moore a degree of leniency during the proceedings.
Moore’s attorney, Ellen Michaels, spoke in his defence, framing the outcome as a momentary lapse rather than a reflection of his character. “This is a man who is not defined by this moment but how he has responded to it,” she asserted.
The case has shed light on issues of misconduct and the significant implications it carries in educational environments, especially in collegiate sports. The fallout for Moore from such allegations not only culminated in his job loss but also executed a considerable toll on his reputation and personal life.
The judgement has raised discussions on the need for stricter measures and support systems within institutions to protect victims in similar situations. Shiver’s experience underscores the importance of measures being in place to ensure a safe working environment and the necessity for accountability for those in positions of power.
This case remains a significant reminder of the ongoing challenges surrounding sexual misconduct and the power dynamics at play in workplaces, especially within sports, highlighting the need for cultural shifts to promote safety and respect for all employees.
