John Mayer has made a much-anticipated return with the release of his new single “Tom and Jerry,” his first piece of solo music since 2021. This track, which came out on 23 October, encapsulates the complexities of a fleeting romance, depicting a relationship characterised by a “cat and mouse” dynamic.

The lyrics of “Tom and Jerry” delve into themes of unreciprocated affection, illustrating a scenario where love seems elusive and difficult to grasp. Mayer’s smooth vocals convey a poignant message in lines such as, “You only want me when you got someone / You only want me when it’s wrong,” indicating the frustration of wanting someone who isn’t fully present. He encourages honesty with lines like, “Whatever his name is / Just tell him goodbye,” reflecting a longing for transparency in love.

In an Instagram post explaining the inspiration behind the title, Mayer revealed that “Tom and Jerry” was the name he used to save the initial voice memo for the song. He wanted to capture the playful yet intricate nature of a relationship, much like the antics of the iconic cartoon characters. “And if you ever come through, which I doubt you’ll do, I’ll run away with you,” he elaborated, highlighting the adventurous spirit entwined in the song’s creation.
This release marks a significant moment in Mayer’s career, as it is the first new solo material since his 2021 album, “Sob Rock.” Mayer expressed gratitude to his fans for their patience with a heartfelt message, “Thank you for waiting. ♥️” In an August performance at a private SiriusXM show, he teased audiences by promising the release of new songs soon, and “Tom and Jerry” appears to fulfil that commitment.
Alongside his musical comeback, Mayer has also ventured into the realm of music production by launching Sob Rock Records. The venture, in collaboration with Universal Music Group’s Mercury Records, allows Mayer greater creative control over his music. He expressed excitement about this new chapter, stating, “The path from creative vision to execution has never been easier or more rewarding. I feel very inspired, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”
Over the years, Mayer has spent a significant amount of time touring with Dead & Company, a project that has concluded following the death of Bob Weir last January. The band’s final performances included two shows at the Sphere in Las Vegas, and Mayer has announced plans to return to the venue for a 21-show residency in 2027. Scheduled for April through June, these concerts will showcase Mayer in various formats, including solo performances, collaborations with his full band, and a trio featuring musicians Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino.
Mayer expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming residency, stating that announcing the shows was one of the highlights of his year. He has been working tirelessly on the concept and is eager to present his artistic vision to fans. “It’s never lost on me that I get to work with the most talented people to make beautiful things for a living,” he said, highlighting the collaborative nature of his creative process.
In addition to his new music, Mayer recently marked the 30th anniversary of Mohegan Sun with a solo performance on 9 October at the casino and resort in Uncasville, Connecticut. During his set, he engaged with the audience, playfully referencing his own local roots with quips about shared experiences growing up in the area. His deep affection for his home state was evident as he remarked, “I love Connecticut,” affirming his connection to the community.
With “Tom and Jerry” now available, fans eagerly await what else Mayer has in store, both musically and in his upcoming performances. As he embarks on this new chapter with renewed gusto, it’s clear that his creative journey continues to evolve, drawing in audiences with the deftness and emotional depth for which he is renowned.
