Angus Cloud, best known for his role in HBO’s critically acclaimed series “Euphoria,” tragically passed away on July 31, 2023, at the young age of 25. The news of his death shocked fans and colleagues alike, coming just a week after he had participated in a poignant moment with his family: spreading his father’s ashes in Ireland. His father, Conor Hickey, had succumbed to mesothelioma just three months prior to Cloud’s passing, leaving the family grappling with profound grief.

Cloud, whose birth name was Conor Angus Cloud Hickey, achieved fame almost overnight after being discovered by casting director Eléonore Hendricks while walking the streets of New York City. The actor portrayed Fezco, a drug dealer with a deep emotional core, in “Euphoria.” Initially, his character was set to die at the end of the first season; however, creator Sam Levinson was so taken by Cloud’s performance that he chose to keep him on for future seasons, a tribute to Cloud’s significant impact on the show and its audience.

In an interview, Levinson expressed heartfelt sentiments about Cloud, stating, “I couldn’t keep him alive in real life, but I could keep his character alive in the show.” Following Cloud’s death, he made the decision to preserve the character’s arc in the anticipated third season, which is set to be released in April 2026. “I think he’d be very proud of it,” Levinson added, underscoring the profound bond they shared.
The circumstances surrounding Cloud’s death were later confirmed by the Alameda County Coroner, who reported that he died from acute intoxication due to an accidental overdose. At the time, various substances—including cocaine, methamphetamine, fentanyl, and benzodiazepines—were found in his system. His mother, Lisa Cloud, indicated that Angus had been deeply affected by the loss of his father but asserted that his death was not intentional. She described Angus’s last day as filled with joy and hope as he sought to organise his living space and plan for his family’s future.
The tragic outcome occurred at his family’s home in Oakland, California. In a heart-wrenching account, Lisa noted that Angus had been immersed in his artwork prior to his untimely passing. “He was reorganising his room… He did not intend to end his life,” she stated, fondly recalling their last moments together and his final words—a loving farewell conveyed before she went to bed.
Cloud’s final night included a visit to memorialise a late friend who had also succumbed to substance abuse. A companion from that evening, Daniel Aguilera, recounted that Cloud was in good spirits and seemed poised to honour the memory of his friend through their shared act of artistic expression. Aguilera’s observations painted a picture of a young man who was navigating profound loss with creativity and connection.
Despite the heartbreak of his untimely demise, Cloud continued to leave a lasting legacy through his recent work. In addition to his iconic role in “Euphoria,” he had completed filming for projects including the upcoming action-comedy “Freaky Tales” and voiced a character in the animated film, “The Garfield Movie.” His final performance was in the horror film “Abigail,” which highlighted his versatility as an actor and his ability to infuse life into diverse characters.
Following Cloud’s death, reactions poured in from fans and colleagues, with many taking to social media to pay tribute. Zendaya, his co-star in “Euphoria,” reflected on his charm and spirit, recalling him as someone who brought light to any room he entered. This sentiment was echoed widely, with many noting his infectious laughter and warmth.
In the wake of this tragedy, his childhood teacher, Mike Oz, has taken the initiative to establish a skate park in honour of Cloud—dubbed Cloud Park—with the intention of creating a safe space for young people to gather and engage in creative pursuits. As the community comes together to celebrate Cloud’s life and contributions, his mother noted that the public’s grief and admiration for her son has been deeply moving.
Angus Cloud’s legacy extends beyond his roles on screen, as his joyful spirit continues to be remembered by those who knew him and the numerous fans who admired him from afar. His life serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and community support, encouraging open dialogue about struggles that often go unshared.
