Eric Dane’s poignant presence will grace the screen one last time in the eagerly awaited third season of HBO’s hit series ‘Euphoria’. The show began filming shortly after the actor publicly shared his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This season not only marks a significant return for Dane, reprising his role as Cal Jacobs, but it also serves as a heartfelt tribute to his legacy, following his passing on February 19 at the age of 53.

In a recent interview with Extra, Sam Levinson, the creator of ‘Euphoria’, reflected on the experience of working with Dane during a challenging time in his life. Levinson recalled a conversation in which Dane informed him of his ALS diagnosis, sparking discussions about life and the future. “I loved him very deeply. I said, ‘Eric, whatever shape you show up in, we’re gonna make it work. I have faith that it’s all gonna work,’” Levinson remarked.
As filming progressed, Levinson noted changes in Dane’s voice but was determined to adapt to his friend’s situation. “He showed up and I could tell he had a slight slur in his voice,” Levinson recounted. “I said, ‘Don’t worry. We’ll just put, like, five beer bottles in front of you and you’ve been drinking all night.’ He was like, ‘Perfect, perfect.’ And his character, it was such a gift.”
The first glimpse of Dane’s performance in season three was unveiled in a trailer released on March 30. The footage features Dane’s character, Cal, reconnecting with Jules, played by Hunter Schafer, following their complicated history from season one. The brief exchange between the two characters—“Remember me?” to which he replies, “How could I forget?”—hints at the emotional depth expected this season.
Levinson expressed admiration for Dane’s professionalism as he worked alongside a large ensemble cast during filming. “We’ve got 28 cast members on set, and he just showed up every day with such grace and dignity,” he said, emphasising Dane’s inherent kindness and stellar human qualities.
Dane publicly disclosed his ALS diagnosis in April 2025, expressing gratitude for his supportive family as he navigated this new chapter. He had previously conveyed excitement about returning to ‘Euphoria’, stating, “I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to the set of Euphoria next week.” Tragically, just ten months later, his family confirmed his passing, releasing a statement filled with love and appreciation for his life.
“We share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, who were the centre of his world,” the statement read, capturing the essence of Dane’s life as one filled with love and devotion.
Dane’s journey with ALS turned him into a champion for awareness and research surrounding the disease, with a desire to support others facing similar struggles. The family’s statement underlined how deeply his spirit will be missed and the impact he made in the lives of many. “Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received,” they added, requesting privacy during their time of grief.
Sharon Stone, who appears in season three as a guest star, shared insights about her long-standing friendship with Dane, revealing her role in supporting him during his pursuit of the ‘Euphoria’ role. “He came over to my house and brought me gluten-free cookies and we’d sit and discuss it because he really wanted that job,” she recalled, highlighting how much the role meant to him personally.
As the third season prepares to air, viewers can expect not only performances from returning cast members, including Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney, and Zendaya, but also a heartfelt tribute to Dane’s legacy. The show is set to premiere on Sunday, April 12, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.
As fans and colleagues prepare to celebrate Dane’s contribution to ‘Euphoria’ and pay their respects to an extraordinary life, his final performance promises to resonate deeply with audiences, encapsulating both the artistry and the courage he embodied throughout his career.
