Starting April 24, Southwest Airlines will introduce a new programme allowing passengers to check a case of wine without incurring any additional fees. This initiative, named the Sip and Ship programme, is aimed at travellers flying out of select regions renowned for their wine production, giving them the opportunity to take home a taste of their journey.
Under this new policy, customers will be permitted to check in one case of wine, containing up to 12 bottles, at no extra charge. This move is part of Southwest’s strategy to enhance the travel experience for wine enthusiasts, as reiterated by Andrew Watterson, the airline’s Chief Operating Officer. He stated, “By launching Sip and Ship, we’re offering our customers even more convenience and an opportunity to continue sipping and savouring their time in wine country.”

The Sip and Ship programme seeks to make it easier for holidaymakers to bring back a souvenir from their visits to the picturesque wine regions of the West Coast. The airline noted that this initiative adds another layer of convenience for those wishing to explore and enjoy new places, underscoring their commitment to improving customer experience right up to the moment passengers arrive back home.

When packing wine for the journey, passengers must adhere to specific guidelines. A “case” is defined as a single box or suitcase containing no more than 12 bottles and weighing less than 50 pounds. Wine must be securely packed in a standard shipping box or suitcase that conforms to checked baggage regulations. Importantly, all bottles should remain unopened, display the manufacturer’s label, and be carefully packed in a leak-proof bag to prevent any breakage during transit.
Customers looking to utilise the free wine check must also keep in mind that the top of their shipping container should not be sealed until Southwest staff inspect it at the check-in counter. Additionally, only those aged 21 or older will be eligible to check wine under the new scheme, reflecting the legal age requirements for alcohol consumption.
This announcement coincides with Southwest Airlines’ launch of its 14th route to California, providing new nonstop flights to the Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa. Scheduled to begin on April 7, these flights will connect destinations such as San Diego, Las Vegas, Denver, and Burbank, California. Watterson expressed anticipation about the new route, highlighting the airline’s dedication to expanding customer access to California’s diverse and beautiful locales, particularly the celebrated vineyards of Sonoma County.
The new developments in Southwest’s offerings aim to ensure that every journey remains memorable and enjoyable, extending beyond the time spent in the air to what passengers can take home with them. The airline’s approach has been well received among the public, particularly among wine lovers keen to share their discoveries with friends and family back home.
As air travel continues to evolve, with increasing emphasis on customer satisfaction, initiatives like the Sip and Ship programme reflect a trend towards providing specialised services that accommodate unique traveller needs. Those planning a visit to wine country can now relish not only the wines of the region but also the ease of transporting them, making for a more enriching travel experience.
Overall, the introduction of complimentary wine check-in aligns with Southwest’s broader mission of enhancing convenience and enjoyment for its customers, ensuring that every part of the travel process is seamless and rewarding.
