Tenn. School Board Member Tells Student ‘God, You’re Hot’ During Public Meeting

In Washington County, Tennessee, a community is expressing outrage over the actions of school board member Keith Ervin, who has been heavily criticised for making an inappropriate remark directed at a minor during a public meeting. The incident took place on April 2, when a live-streamed session showcased Ervin placing his arm around a female student and referring to her as “hot”.

The student, who has not been identified due to her status as a minor, was participating in a discussion regarding school issues when Ervin’s comments drew immediate attention. The situation escalated as parents and community members began calling for his resignation, highlighting the gravity of his remarks.

As seen in the recorded footage, Ervin, who was seated alongside Washington County Superintendent Jerry Boyd, praised the student after she expressed her views. Following her contributions, he remarked, “God, you’re hot. You know that? Where do you go to school at?” The comment and the physical gesture provoked concern regarding the appropriateness of his behaviour towards underage students.

In response to the backlash, Ervin defended his actions, claiming that his remarks had been misconstrued. “There’s a lot of context missing,” he explained in an interview following the incident. He asserted that his intention was to commend the student, whom he described as impressive and articulate. “I didn’t mean nothing by it. She was just, she was on fire. She asked good questions, and I was bragging about her,” he stated.

Superintendent Jerry Boyd addressed the situation in a statement, asserting that individual board members should be accountable for their comments and actions. He indicated that Ervin would need to clarify the intent behind his statement to the public, stating, “They need to explain, as elected officials, what was behind their vote or their comment.” Boyd’s comments reflect a broader concern within the community regarding the conduct of school officials.

Amid the growing discontent, the Washington County Board of Education has scheduled an emergency meeting for April 8 to discuss the matter further. Board chairperson Annette Buchanan condemned Ervin’s comments, stating that they objectified and diminished a young woman. “What we saw was shocking. No explanation can justify that,” Buchanan declared, indicating that a motion to censure Ervin would likely be considered during the meeting.

Many parents, including Hillary Haley, have vocalised their concerns about Ervin’s fitness for office in light of his inappropriate behaviour. “As a member of the school board, he is responsible for our children’s health, welfare, safety and education,” she remarked, emphasising her belief that he should not be allowed near students after such conduct.

In addition to the emergency meeting, a protest has been organised for April 8, demanding Ervin’s resignation. The community’s dissatisfaction is evident, and a Change.org petition advocating for the removal of both Ervin and Superintendent Boyd has garnered over 3,000 signatures.

Despite the increasing pressure, the process for removing a school board member in Tennessee is complex and only achievable through a successful recall election. Ervin is currently seeking re-election, which brings an additional layer of complexity to the matter.
