Alix Earle, the social media influencer and founder of the newly launched skincare line Reale Actives, has recently faced scrutiny from critics questioning her authenticity given her prior use of acne treatments. Responding to these criticisms, Earle took to TikTok to share her personal journey with acne and clarify her motivations behind creating her skincare brand.

On March 25, Earle announced the launch of Reale Actives, generating significant buzz with a creative reveal that involved the completion of a billboard featuring her image in New York City. Despite the excitement surrounding the launch, some individuals on social media expressed doubt about her credibility as a skincare brand founder. This skepticism stems from her previous disclosures regarding the use of acne medications, specifically Accutane and spironolactone.

In a TikTok video released shortly after the backlash, Earle showed a candid side as she addressed her critics. “I can’t be launching a skincare company because I’ve done Accutane three times, so I’m just a big fat liar,” Earle remarked, directly acknowledging the concerns raised online. This comment resonated with her followers and highlighted the ongoing discussions about authenticity within the beauty industry.
Earle proceeded to detail her skincare journey with her 8.3 million TikTok fans. She displayed photographs that chronicled her battle with acne, particularly highlighting the severe outbreaks she experienced in August 2022. “Obviously, this is like very extreme acne,” Earle noted while gesturing to an image of her complexion at that time. Her experiences of using Accutane thrice ultimately led her to seek additional treatments, including spironolactone, as she faced persistent skin issues.
After spending a year on spironolactone and seeing mixed results, Earle shifted her focus to establishing a comprehensive skincare regimen. She began consulting with her dermatologist, Dr Kiran Mian, and spent considerable time testing products. Together, they developed the four-step routine that would later form the basis of Reale Actives. Earle was transparent about her concerns during a busy period of her life, including competing on season 34 of Dancing with the Stars, where she feared that heavy makeup and perspiration might hinder her skin’s progress.
Reflecting on her experience, Earle shared that she discontinued using certain active ingredients, such as mandelic acid, on the advice of her dermatologist to prevent irritation. Since formally integrating her new skincare routine into her daily life, Earle claims to have achieved the most consistent results for her skin since she began her battle with acne at the age of 11. “I’m not here to lie, not here to try and trick anyone,” she asserted, reaffirming her commitment to honesty.
The influencer’s primary objective with Reale Actives is to provide a straightforward solution for those navigating the complexities of acne and skincare. In a discussion with PEOPLE magazine ahead of the launch, Earle expressed her desire to simplify the skincare process for consumers. “Acne in general is always really confusing and there are so many products out there,” she explained. “I realised that when I actually scaled back my routine a little bit…my skin started to have a ton of improvement.”
Earle’s vision extends beyond simply offering products; she aims to empower individuals—especially young women—by helping them embrace their imperfections. “I want it to be just kick-starting a wave of girls feeling confident in those imperfections because they’re real, everyone deals with it,” she added.
As Earle navigates the complexities of the beauty industry, her experiences and transparency about her journey with acne resonate with many, driving conversations about authenticity and skin health. While criticism remains a part of her narrative, Earle appears determined to focus on uplifting others through her new brand. As she continues to advocate for self-acceptance and clear skin, the response to her skincare line remains to be seen as it unfolds in the increasingly competitive market.
