In a remarkable birth that has left many in awe, baby Cesar Junior Ferreira Simoes has made headlines as the largest newborn in history at the Eastbourne Midwifery Unit (EMU) in Eastbourne, England. Born on 6th January, Cesar tipped the scales at an impressive 11 lbs and 14 oz, a weight that astonished his parents, Fabio Ferreira and Rebecca Saxby, who had anticipated a more modest arrival of around 8 lbs.

The couple’s surprise at their son’s size was so profound that midwives at the unit had to resort to a secondary set of scales to verify the reading. This extra step confirmed that Cesar was indeed the largest baby ever born at the facility, breaking records and setting a new standard for newborn weights in the area.
Since returning home, Cesar has continued to impress. Remarkably, he is already fitting into clothing designed for three-month-old infants and requiring size two nappies, despite being merely days old. Ferreira, measuring 6 ft 2 in and weighing approximately 231 lbs, commented on the unexpected size of their child, explaining, “If you see the size of me, you’d probably expect it.”
The midwifery unit in Eastbourne primarily delivers babies naturally, refraining from performing caesarean sections. With this in mind, Ferreira shared that although they had considered the possibility of a larger baby, the actual weight was beyond their expectations. He noted, “We did think he’d be a bigger baby, but we didn’t know how big.”
Cesar’s delivery has been a source of astonishment for the medical staff as well. As soon as he entered the world, midwives exchanged words of amazement, informing the new parents, “You’ve just given birth to the biggest baby in Eastbourne history!” Ferreira recalled the moment with pride, reflecting on the unusual nature of Cesar’s birth.
Saxby, who described her pregnancy as somewhat stressful due to the rapid growth, admitted that she had felt larger than expected throughout. Despite her initial concerns, she remained optimistic and expressed gratitude to the EMU staff for their support during the pregnancy.

Saxby described the experience as “pretty traumatic” but expressed tremendous relief that Cesar arrived safely. “Throughout the pregnancy, I was bigger than normal. I thought he’d be around 9 or 10 lbs, but I never anticipated he would weigh 11 lbs 14 oz,” she said. The couple is now adjusting to life as a family of four, as they also have an older child to care for.
