Man Died ‘on Impact’ After Parachute Failed to Open While He Was BASE Jumping Off Canyon, Sister Says

A tragic incident has occurred in Utah, where 33-year-old Weston Huff lost his life while attempting a BASE jump at Rock Canyon. The Provo Police Department confirmed the details of the accident, which took place on Saturday, March 21, around 12:50 p.m. local time.

Authorities responded to emergency calls reporting that a man had fallen in a location referred to as “Bad Bananas.” Upon their arrival, the police discovered that Huff had died instantly from the impact of the fall. Family members have since identified him as an experienced skydiver who was adventurous by nature, but he was jumping alone at the time of the incident.

According to police reports, it appears that Huff experienced a malfunction with his parachute during the jump. The authorities expressed their condolences to Huff’s family, stating, “Our sympathies are with the family and loved ones of Weston Huff.” The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident is still ongoing, pending a report from the medical examiner’s office.

Weston Huff was well-known for his passion for flight, which included not only paragliding and BASE jumping but also being a certified tandem paragliding instructor. His mother, Trina Preece, emphasised the level of trust others placed in her son, stating, “People put their lives in his hands. And when it wasn’t someone else, he was at risk of his life in his own hands.”

Huff faced personal challenges throughout his life, having been diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome and Asperger’s syndrome. His mother spoke about the struggles he encountered, revealing that he dealt with both public and private hardships. Despite these challenges, Preece highlighted her son’s enduring positivity. “A lot of people walk away from hard experiences being jaded and hardened,” she explained, illustrating Huff’s resilience and capacity for kindness.

Describing her brother’s love for flying, Kalli Bistrattin Machado, Huff’s sister, recounted that he had previously jumped from the same spot where the fatal accident occurred. She mentioned that there were witnesses who saw him pull his parachute only to find it not fully expanded when he fell. “There were people that came running as soon as they saw it, and they tried CPR for about 10 to 15 minutes before emergency services arrived,” Machado recounted.

Following Huff’s tragic passing, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support his family during this difficult time. In the campaign description, the organiser spoke of the special bond Huff shared with his family, especially with his mother, who brought him into the world “against all the odds stacked against them.” The statement added a poignant reflection on Huff’s life, capturing his spirit: “Weston came into and left this world in the same exact way: flying, free, and full of love.”
