In a remarkable effort to inspire change and encourage understanding, 16-year-old Lexi Frederick from Iowa is using her own experience with medical adversity to raise awareness about pediatric strokes. Lexi’s journey began when she suffered a stroke at just six weeks old, subsequently leading to a diagnosis of cerebral palsy and epilepsy.

Despite the challenges presented by her condition, Lexi has emerged as a resilient and passionate advocate. Speaking about her experiences, she highlighted her desire to make a difference. “I just want to change the world, make it a better place for everyone, no matter what challenges they have,” she stated recently. This determination was evident during her visits to the neonatal intensive care unit at Diyarbakir Gazi Yasargil Training and Research Hospital in Turkiye, where she shared her story in the hope of educating others.
Lexi’s early medical ordeal left her with limited mobility, particularly affecting the right side of her body, which makes everyday tasks such as tying her shoes challenging. However, she maintains a positive outlook, saying, “Sometimes, I feel like I am not as good as others because of the limitations that I have, but I adapt and I just be myself.” Her approach underscores a key aspect of her advocacy: embracing one’s identity and limitations while encouraging others to do the same.
The young advocate found her voice through participation in beauty pageants, where she realised she could use the platform to amplify crucial messages about disabilities and awareness of pediatric strokes. With strokes affecting one in every 4,000 newborns and approximately 2,000 older children per year, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine, Lexi is determined to inform the public about the realities facing these young patients.
Besides her involvement in pageants, Lexi speaks at events, sharing her experiences and promoting understanding within her community. She believes awareness is critical in helping society to not only acknowledge the existence of pediatric strokes but also to foster a supportive environment for those affected. “I want everyone to know that even a small thing like a smile makes a difference in the world,” she declared.
In recognition of her impactful work, Lexi has been selected as one of the nine finalists for the National Stroke Association’s Stroke Hero Award, with the winner scheduled to be announced on May 1. This honour reflects not only her personal resilience but also her commitment to advocacy. As her mother, Kelli Frederick, remarked, “Lexi has been a pillar of hope and inspiration, advocating for pediatric stroke, sharing her story, and developing into a powerhouse of change and positivity.” Such support from her family has been instrumental in Lexi’s journey toward becoming a champion for children facing similar challenges.
Despite the ups and downs following her stroke, Lexi’s inherent positivity shines through. Kelli noted, “Her innate happy demeanor has brought learning and joy for many.” The Frederick family hopes that Lexi’s advocacy will lead to greater support and understanding for children affected by strokes, urging the community to extend their compassion towards individuals with disabilities.
Pediatric strokes remain an overlooked issue, often misunderstood due to their rarity. They can result from a variety of causes, including congenital heart defects and blood clotting disorders, and may present symptoms such as seizures and altered mental states. Raising awareness about these issues is critical for both affected families and the wider public.
Through her continued efforts, Lexi Frederick is not only changing perceptions of pediatric strokes but also inspiring hope in countless others. With each speech and appearance, she stresses the importance of kindness and understanding, guiding her audience to see beyond limitations and embrace the potential that lies within every individual. Her mission reflects a powerful commitment to fostering a more inclusive and compassionate world for all.
