A Thai man was apprehended after breaching the enclosure of a well-known pygmy hippo, Moo Deng, at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi Province on Tuesday, March 17. According to security footage, the incident occurred around 5:00 p.m. local time, when the individual climbed into the restricted area while zoo officials were attending to their evening duties.

The zoo reported that thankfully, Moo Deng and her family, which includes her mother Jona, were unharmed during the trespassing episode. In a statement posted on Facebook, the zoo reassured the public that the animals were safe and under observation.
Narongwit Chodchoy, the zoo’s director, confirmed to the Associated Press that the man, a national of Thailand, was initially charged with trespassing but has since been released on bail. He clarified that there was no attempt on the part of the intruder to interact with the animals, which contributed to the animals’ safety during the encounter.
The intruder appeared to use a tablet to photograph or possibly film Moo Deng and the other pygmy hippos before making his exit from the enclosure, as documented by footage obtained by the Bangkok Post. This alarming behaviour has prompted the authorities to investigate his motives, although specific details have yet to be disclosed.
Autthapol “Benz” Nundee, Moo Deng’s keeper, commented on the incident, expressing relief that no harm came to the animals. He stated, “Fortunately, he did not get bitten,” thereby underscoring the potentially dangerous nature of the situation.
Moo Deng gained online notoriety in September 2024, with videos of her antics going viral on social media, leading to increased visitor interest at the zoo. The director noted that Moo Deng frequently attracts crowds, with both local and international visitors keen to observe her and her family.
In light of this recent incident, the zoo has committed to closely monitoring the behaviour of the animals involved. They also expressed gratitude to the public for their continuous support and vigilance regarding the welfare of the wildlife housed in the facility.
The management reiterated the importance of following the rules and instructions provided by staff for the safety of both patrons and the animals. They added that any risk-taking behaviour would prompt legal action, emphasising their dedication to maintaining a safe environment for both visitors and the creatures in their care.
Despite multiple attempts to obtain further information, neither the Royal Thai Police nor Khao Kheow Open Zoo has responded to requests for additional comments on the situation. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of respecting wildlife habitats, encouraging both visitors and the public to adhere closely to zoo regulations.
