In a tragic event that has gripped a Utah community, Michael Haight killed his wife, Tausha, their five children, and his mother-in-law before taking his own life. This shocking case, which unfolded in January 2023, is the subject of the upcoming Investigation Discovery special titled *Toxic: What Happened in the Haight House?*, hosted by Elizabeth Chambers, set to air on October 27.

The Haight family was perceived as an ideal model of suburban life in Enoch, Utah, yet hidden beneath the surface were years of alleged emotional and physical abuse. Michael Haight, aged 42 at the time of the incident, was reported to have exhibited suspicious behaviour that culminated in the horrific events of January 4, 2023. On that fateful morning, he fatally shot Tausha, 40, and their five children—Macie (17), Briley (12), twins Sienna and Ammon (7), and Gavin (4)—as well as Gail Earl, a 78-year-old woman identified as the mother of Tausha. After the shocking act, Michael took his own life, leaving the small community reeling.

Investigations revealed multiple reports of abuse against Michael preceding this tragedy. In a concerning pattern, Enoch police and the Utah Division of Child and Family Services were called to the family’s home on several occasions due to allegations of child abuse between 2020 and 2023. Notably, it was the eldest daughter, Macie, who had bravely reported incidents of both emotional and physical abuse her father had inflicted upon her and her mother. Macie detailed alarming instances of being shaken and choked by Michael, alongside accounts of emotional manipulation which included derogatory language aimed at Tausha.
Although Michael was never criminally charged for these allegations due to lack of evidence, the reports were troubling. Over the years, Macie reported several incidents, including a dangerous episode in January 2021 where Michael allegedly drove recklessly with all family members in the vehicle, and another incident just weeks before the shootings where he reportedly threw a younger child to the floor.
In December 2022, amidst mounting stress, Tausha filed for divorce after being disturbed by Michael’s erratic behaviour, including his removal of all firearms from their home. This decision came shortly after an already tumultuous year marked by a job loss and the pressure of impending legal actions. Michael was demonstrated to be in a state of distress, conducting alarming internet searches that hinted at his disturbed mental state.
As the situation escalated, Tausha’s therapist reached out to police on January 4, asking for a welfare check after Tausha missed a therapy appointment. Unfortunately, law enforcement investigations later revealed a scene of devastation as all members of the Haight family were found dead at their home. The police later discovered Michael’s body in the basement, where he had apparently attempted to silence his actions by putting tissue in his ears.
In the aftermath, Michael left behind a troubling suicide note in which he absolved himself of responsibility for the murders, blaming those he had just killed for manipulating him. The note, described by many as distressing, portrayed a man unable to acknowledge the gravity of his actions.
The incident has sparked significant public outrage, especially following an obituary that portrayed Michael in a positive light. The obituary was quickly met with backlash, as it described him as a dedicated father and community member, while failing to address his horrific actions. The publication later removed the obituary amid widespread criticism.
In response to the tragedy, the state of Utah has now initiated reforms to its domestic abuse protocols. Following the Haight family murders, lawmakers recognised the urgent need for change. New legislation implemented in July 2023 mandates that all police departments across Utah utilise the Lethality Assessment Protocol to better identify and support victims of domestic violence.
The Haight family’s shocking end serves as a grim reminder of the issues of domestic abuse that can often remain hidden in seemingly perfect families. As their community comes to terms with this unspeakable loss, the story of the Haight family underscores the need for vigilance, support, and effective intervention to prevent such tragedies in the future.
