A couple from Florida has been apprehended following allegations of fraud involving their 15-year-old son, whom they claimed was suffering from cancer. Edward Downing and Stephanie Skeris were arrested on February 27 after an extensive investigation by the Dixie County Sheriff’s Office revealed that the boy had never been diagnosed with the illness.

Authorities say that Downing and Skeris managed to entice donations from the local community through various means, including fundraisers and online campaigns, all conducted under the false premise that their son required costly cancer treatment. The sheriff’s office released a statement confirming that the investigation was initiated after concerns surfaced regarding the family’s situation and the legitimacy of the claims being made.

Investigators discovered that the couple had repeatedly informed local residents, businesses, and even media representatives about their son’s purported battle with cancer. However, upon reviewing the boy’s medical history and consulting with health care professionals, authorities confirmed that he had not been diagnosed with any form of cancer. Furthermore, it was established that his legitimate medical expenses were being covered by Medicaid.

During the investigation, it emerged that various community fundraisers had taken place, including events run by local businesses, which were advertised as opportunities to raise money for the teenager’s cancer treatment. In a March 2025 interview, Stephanie Downing expressed her gratitude for the community’s support, stating that the funds helped alleviate the financial burden of her son’s doctor visits.

The investigation revealed that the boy had started receiving medical attention in December 2024 due to issues like significant weight loss. However, medical evaluations conducted by health professionals did not indicate the presence of cancer or tumours. Instead, they suggested that the teenager needed nutritional support and further monitoring.

Despite the medical findings that countered their claims, Downing and Skeris allegedly continued to assert that their son was suffering from cancer affecting various parts of his body, including his chest and internal organs. This led to further scrutiny from medical professionals and child welfare investigators, who raised alarms about the teenager’s health and care.

Financial records obtained during the inquiry showed evidence of a bank account set up ostensibly for the boy’s medical expenses. However, authorities allege that the funds collected through donations had been diverted for personal use, facilitating expenses unrelated to his care. Purchases included retail items, dining out, fuel, and cash withdrawals, all of which raised further suspicions about the couple’s intentions.

The investigation also uncovered an online fundraising initiative, including a GoFundMe campaign that sought financial assistance for the alleged treatment and surgeries related to the boy’s non-existent cancer. These online efforts contributed to the significant flow of donations that were purportedly meant for medical purposes but were misappropriated.

As a result of their actions, Edward Downing and Stephanie Skeris have been charged with multiple offences, including scheme to defraud, communications fraud, and neglect of a child, all classified as third-degree felonies under Florida law. Bond for each of the accused was set at $75,000, and following their arrests, both individuals were released.

In the wake of these developments, the teenager was placed into protective care, where he continues to receive medical evaluations and support.
