The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) has expressed outrage following an incident in downtown Indianapolis in which a car allegedly struck a security guard and an on-duty police officer before fleeing the scene. Chief Tanya Terry has publicly condemned the driver’s actions, describing them as “reckless and violent.” The episode, which has sparked widespread condemnation across the city, was captured on video, leading to intense public scrutiny.

On 7 March, footage emerged online showing a vehicle leaving a busy nightlife area after colliding with a security guard. The subsequent investigation revealed that an IMPD officer had additionally been struck by the same vehicle. Chief Terry voiced her dismay over the incident in a statement shared via the department’s Facebook page, stating that the video left her “angry and deeply disturbed.”
While the initial reactions from the public were filled with shock and anger, there were also concerns raised about the actions of individuals present during the incident. Chief Terry lamented that many witnesses continued recording events on their mobile devices rather than intervening or calling for help. “What is most disappointing is that many people continued recording on their phones and going about their night after watching those working to keep the area safe get injured,” she remarked. The driver suspected of causing the accident, identified as 28-year-old Derrick Bryant, was apprehended shortly thereafter with the help of an off-duty officer from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. Following his arrest, Bryant was preliminarily charged with several offences, including operating a vehicle while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident that caused injuries.
Fortunately, Chief Terry confirmed that the officer involved had not sustained serious injuries and was expected to recover. “Thankfully, the officer did not suffer significant injuries, and he is anticipated to make a full recovery,” she affirmed, further expressing relief that no other individuals were seriously harmed during the reckless escapade.

She firmly stated that the events were not related to a street takeover or an involvement of multiple vehicles, insisting that it was solely the actions of one intoxicated driver endangering lives. “This was one driver who chose to drive while intoxicated and endanger the entire community,” she explained.

She emphasised that those who wear a badge or provide protection should never face undue hostility while fulfilling their duties. “No one who wears a badge or stands guard to protect this community should ever be treated as a target or a spectacle,” she declared, underscoring the significant risks associated with such dangerous behaviour.
