Teddi Mellencamp, known for her role on “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” has revealed that she was recently hospitalised due to a severe medical condition caused by a new medication. The 44-year-old reality star woke up one morning to find her body covered in painful sores, leading her to seek urgent medical attention.

In a candid conversation with friend and co-host Tamra Judge on the March 3 episode of their podcast, “Two T’s in a Pod,” Mellencamp described her alarming symptoms. Initially mistaking her condition for the flu, she was shocked to wake up with what she characterised as “sores all over my entire body.” She elaborated on the excruciating nature of the sores, stating, “They hurt and they burned,” prompting her to head to urgent care in hopes of a quick resolution.

At the urgent care facility, Mellencamp was advised by medical professionals to go directly to the emergency room. Upon her arrival, tests revealed that she had developed Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a rare but serious adverse reaction that affects the skin and mucous membranes. According to the Mayo Clinic, this condition is considered a medical emergency that often necessitates hospitalisation, as the top layer of skin can die, resulting in painful blisters and extensive rashes.
Stevens-Johnson syndrome can be triggered by certain medications, and individuals with a history of cancer are particularly susceptible to its onset. Mellencamp was first diagnosed with stage 2 melanoma in 2022, a particularly aggressive form of skin cancer. Following an extensive treatment regimen that included 17 surgeries, she shared that the cancer had spread to her brain and lungs.
However, she soon received positive news; doctors indicated she was “no trace of cancer” at present, although she remains in stage four and is continuing her immunotherapy treatments. The recent diagnosis of Stevens-Johnson syndrome has added a new layer of complexity to her health journey.
During her hospital stay, Mellencamp experienced multiple blisters, affecting her mouth and eyes, to the extent that she found it difficult to swallow. Medical staff provided her with steroid injections and antibiotics to help manage the symptoms. “The reason they were like, ‘You have to stay in [the hospital]’ is because they can start to get better and then shift right back up,” she explained of her situation.
Fortunately, after a few days of treatment, her condition began to improve just in time for her to celebrate her daughter Dove’s sixth birthday—an occasion she was particularly eager to mark after missing it the previous year. Mellencamp shares three children—including Slate, 12, and Cruz, 11—with her ex-husband, Edwin Arroyave.
Reflecting on the birthday celebration, Mellencamp admitted she was not feeling entirely well but felt a surge of energy from the moment. “It wasn’t feeling great, but it’s just, like, the adrenaline from being there,” she said, expressing her joy at being present for her daughter’s special day.
This experience serves as a sobering reminder of the complexities of health issues, especially for someone navigating the aftermath of serious medical conditions. Mellencamp’s fans continue to support her through her ongoing challenges, as she navigates life with resilience and determination.
