At the age of 24, Meagan Meadows faced a battle she never expected – a diagnosis of stage 3 colon cancer. Just months prior, she had been a typical young adult, but a troubling symptom changed everything. Discovering blood in her stool prompted a series of medical tests that uncovered the alarming diagnosis, marking the beginning of her arduous journey.

After eight months of intense treatment, including numerous rounds of chemotherapy, Meadows celebrated a significant milestone: she rang the bell signifying the end of her treatment. “The first few days after ringing the bell were challenging,” she reflected, recalling the toll chemotherapy took on her body. “I was sleeping a lot and struggling with nausea and stomach aches.”
As the initial symptoms subsided, Meadows, eager to reclaim her health, made lifestyle changes. “I started to focus on my diet, minimising additives and concentrating on whole foods. I signed up for a gym membership and aim to walk on the treadmill at least five days a week,” she said, expressing a newfound dedication to her physical health. However, as much as physical recovery was vital, she also began to confront the emotional and mental toll of her experience.
Despite her proactive approach to health, Meadows admitted that the aftermath of treatment presented its own set of challenges. “I wasn’t prepared for how quickly the emotional impacts would hit me after ringing the bell,” she explained. While she remained attentive to her body’s needs during treatment, the transition to a post-treatment life proved difficult. To navigate these complexities, Meadows has sought therapy and is exploring local support groups to connect with others who have faced similar experiences.
Reflecting on her experience during treatment, Meadows expressed, “I listened to my body and gave it whatever it wanted during that time. I indulged in sweets and junk food when that was all I could manage to eat. I allowed myself to rest when I needed it, sometimes spending entire days on the couch.” Although she prioritised rest, she also made an effort to stay active on days where her energy levels permitted. “Incorporating some movement into my routine allowed me to recover better between treatments,” she noted.
Unfortunately, the healing process is not straightforward. Meadows reported lingering side effects from chemotherapy, particularly a condition called neuropathy, which affects her ability to perform daily tasks. “I didn’t notice it much during treatment, but since finishing, it has gotten significantly worse. I’m struggling with simple things like buttoning my shirt and tying my shoes because I have lost feeling in my hands,” she shared, highlighting the ongoing challenges that remain despite completing her treatment journey.
Now, as she adjusts to life beyond cancer treatment, Meadows has gained insight into the emotional landscape of surviving such a diagnosis. With friends and family showing support, she still found moments of loneliness throughout her ordeal. “Even those closest to me couldn’t fully grasp what I was experiencing, both physically and emotionally,” she said, emphasising the isolation many can feel during cancer treatment. “This might be the hardest part to accept – that you must navigate your feelings largely on your own.”
With resilience born from adversity, Meadows has come to appreciate both the love she received and the strength she gained from her journey. “Cancer changes you. It has made me stronger both physically and mentally,” she stated, expressing a hopeful yet grounded perspective. While the experience has shaped her identity, she acknowledges the difficulties that accompany such a profound struggle.
As Meadows continues to share her journey with her online community, she inspires others facing similar challenges. Her candid reflections serve as a reminder of the complexities of cancer treatment and the importance of seeking support and prioritising one’s health. By sharing her story, she not only informs but also connects with those who may need to hear her message of resilience and hope.
