In a commendable display of bravery, two officers from the Milpitas Police Department in California rescued a three-year-old girl and her dog from a burning apartment on February 21, 2026. The fire erupted shortly after 3 p.m. in an apartment complex, trapping inhabitants on a balcony while flames blocked all exits. The Milpitas Police Department received a call from a concerned resident who reported, “There’s a fire, and we can’t get out. It’s outside of our door but not inside our house.” Within two minutes of the distress call, Officers Barragan and Hartley arrived on the scene, confronted by thick smoke and an urgent need for action.
As the officers approached the balcony where the family was stranded, it was imperative to assess the situation immediately. They engaged with the trapped family, encouraging the parents to drop their daughter and their dog into the officers’ waiting arms below. One of the officers was heard urging the parents, “Throw her. Sgt. Joseph Heylen of the Milpitas Police reflected on the incident, noting, “We got to get to there as fast as we can and we got to come up with a solution to our problem as fast as we can.” He emphasised the need for officers to think quickly in emergencies, a demand that Officers Barragan and Hartley met with remarkable effectiveness.
