Two students from Ashland High School tragically lost their lives in a car crash that occurred in the early hours of February 22. The incident resulted in a further three students suffering serious injuries, as confirmed by local authorities.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies were called to the scene on East Nevada Street shortly before 1:00 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered an Audi A6, carrying five 17-year-old students, had crashed into a tree. Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle had been travelling at a significant speed when the driver lost control before navigating a sharp turn.

One of the teens was found deceased at the scene, while another succumbed to their injuries shortly after being transported to a local hospital. The remaining passengers were also critically injured and required immediate medical assistance. As of Sunday afternoon, three of the injured teens were reported to be in stable condition under hospital care.
All five individuals involved in the accident were students at Ashland High School. In the wake of the tragedy, the school has initiated grief counselling services for students and staff, recognising the profound emotional impact this event has had on the entire educational community.
Dr. Joseph Hattrick, the superintendent of Ashland School District, expressed his sorrow in a statement issued after the incident. He emphasised the district’s commitment to providing support and compassion to the affected families, students, and the school’s staff during this difficult time. Hattrick extended heartfelt condolences to all those touched by the loss, stressing the community’s shared grief.
“The words we have are not sufficient for a moment like this,” he lamented. “Our entire Ashland School District community is grieving, which is why this message is being sent to all members of the district.”
Francisco Atanes, principal of Ashland High School, also addressed the tragedy, communicating the devastating effects the loss has had on the school community. “Our hearts are shattered by this unimaginable loss,” Atanes stated. “These students were valued members of our school community, and their absence will be profoundly felt in our classrooms, on our campus, and throughout our town.”
