Justin Rettenberger, a retired Marine, 45, vividly recalls his first day in Operation Vigilant Resolve in Iraq back in 2004. The rigorous battle took the lives of twenty-seven U.S. service members in April and May, with 107 more casualties in November and December, along with numerous civilians and insurgents. Reflecting on his experiences, Rettenberger emphasises, “Your life was constantly on the line.”

As a member of Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Rettenberger led his squad through the intense urban warfare in Fallujah. At just 24 years old, he was a mentor and leader to his younger comrades. The bond they shared was akin to family, with Rettenberger guiding them through the chaos of battle with a fatherly presence. He remembers the importance of understanding their weaknesses and strengths for the team’s survival.

The battles of Fallujah were some of the bloodiest in recent American history, leaving a lasting impact on all those involved. The second battle, Operation Phantom Fury, in November and December, was particularly brutal, claiming the lives of many service members, including Rettenberger’s friend Aaron Cole Austin. Despite the harrowing experiences, Rettenberger continues to honour the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for their comrades.

After his service in the Marine Corps, Rettenberger transitioned to civilian life and pursued a career in Southern California, excelling as a safety director for a logistics company. He cherishes his role as a father to his daughter, Brielle, finding immense joy in parenthood. The lessons learned in Fallujah have shaped his approach to challenges, instilling in him a sense of resilience and determination to overcome obstacles.

Rettenberger’s bravery and heroism have been recognised with several esteemed military honours, reflecting his unwavering commitment to serving others. Through it all, he remains humble, guided by the core values instilled in him during his time in the Marine Corps.
