A mother in Texas has claimed that her 5-year-old son was mistakenly placed on a school bus and was missing when she went to pick him up. Kimberlee Gonzalez told local media outlet Kris 6 News that her son’s school, Jesus R. Perez Elementary, “started looking for him inside the school, all over campus, and came back out and said he was nowhere to be found.” Gonzalez said the situation was made all the more worrying because her son Zayden is nonverbal.
Kimberlee Gonzalez, from Kingsville, Texas, shared her distress after realizing her nonverbal son, Zayden, was missing from Jesus R. Perez Elementary. She recounted the harrowing experience to Kris 6 News, expressing her terror when she discovered Zayden was not at the school. Describing her anguish, she mentioned how the school staff searched extensively for him within the premises but could not locate him anywhere.

The Kingsville Police Department initiated a search for the missing 5-year-old boy and examined surveillance footage, eventually discovering that Zayden had been placed on the wrong bus due to a mix-up. After hours of being missing, Zayden was found on a bus near Gillett Intermediate School, which is situated over two miles away from his intended destination. The incident left Gonzalez frantic, prompting her to seek assistance from the public through posts on social media.

Gonzalez detailed the events leading to her son’s disappearance, indicating that a substitute teacher’s error in identifying Zayden as a bus rider rather than a car rider led to the confusion. The gravity of the situation was compounded by Zayden’s nonverbal condition, heightening concerns for his safety. Reflecting on the potential dangers her son faced, Gonzalez shared her fears about the possible outcomes had he been dropped off at an unknown location.
Speaking on behalf of Kingsville Independent School District (ISD), Superintendent Dr. Luz Martinez addressed the incident involving Zayden, acknowledging its seriousness. Martinez emphasised the district’s unwavering commitment to student safety, promising immediate action to rectify any lapses in transport protocols. In response to the alarming incident, Martinez outlined plans to enhance safety measures, including implementing a sibling buddy system, introducing bus seating charts, and implementing student bus badges for identification.
Despite efforts to contact relevant authorities and individuals for further information, responses were not immediately received. Zayden’s ordeal sheds light on the critical importance of stringent safety measures in school transportation systems to prevent similar incidents in the future, underscoring the need for heightened vigilance and adherence to protocols. The community’s support and swift response in locating Zayden serve as a reminder of the collective responsibility to safeguard vulnerable individuals in educational settings.
