A man who had been missing since Halloween was discovered safe during the New York City Marathon in Queens. Giacomo “Jack” Campione, a 55-year-old man with cognitive disabilities from Long Island, New York, went missing on the morning of Friday, October 31. He was last seen in the Queens neighborhood of Flushing, having gotten separated from his group home housemates. The New York City Police Department issued a missing persons alert for Campione, who was reported to be wearing a costume at the time.

According to local reports, Campione, who has the cognitive ability of a 4 to 6-year-old, was out with his group home housemates and an aide when he was accidentally separated from them in a crowd after disembarking from a city bus. His sister, Giselle Campione, described the situation, saying, “His cognitive ability is between a 4 and 6-year-old. So picture a child in the street.” The community rallied to search for him, creating flyers and combing through the streets in an attempt to locate him.
During the two days he was missing, Jack survived by relying on Halloween candy obtained by saying “trick or treat” to people. Reports indicate that he spent the nights sleeping on the sidewalk. On November 2, as participants in the New York City Marathon passed through Queens Plaza, a bystander noticed Jack fall and immediately came to his aid. The individual then contacted the police, who confirmed his identity and safety after locating him.
Despite being found safe, Jack sustained a minor injury to his nose during the fall. Giselle expressed gratitude towards the community for their efforts in helping locate her brother, stating, “If it wasn’t for the community, I don’t know if Jack would be here right now.” She also highlighted the remarkable resilience her brother displayed during his unexpected journey, managing to travel over seven miles, survive without his necessary medication, food, or water, and make it through this challenging ordeal.
Jack’s family is eager to express their thanks to the good Samaritan who assisted him during the marathon. They are hoping to connect with this individual to personally convey their appreciation for aiding Jack in his time of need. Giselle Campione expressed her gratitude towards the city of New York, emphasising the kindness and support her brother received during his moment of crisis. She expressed her heartfelt thanks, saying, “It’s New York. We see a lot of stuff in New York. Thank you New York for helping my brother.”
As the family continues to reflect on this harrowing experience, they are seeking answers from Jack’s group home about the circumstances that led to his separation from his housemates. Meanwhile, they remain immensely grateful for the unwavering support and assistance provided by the community and the good Samaritan who played a crucial role in ensuring Jack’s safe return. As they navigate through this challenging chapter, they are united in their relief and gratitude for Jack’s unexpected but heartwarming rescue during the New York City Marathon.
