As the anticipation builds for the annual Halloween extravagant episode of the ‘Today’ show, executive producer Tom Mazzarelli has shed light on the extensive planning and creativity that marks this much-loved television event. Known for its elaborate costumes and spirited performances, the Halloween special has evolved into a signature feature for the NBC morning programme, often described as its own version of prom.

Preparation for the Halloween episode commences as early as spring, with serious planning taking shape in late summer. Mazzarelli has been part of the show for 15 years and recalls how the ethos of celebrating Halloween has changed over the years. Whereas festivities began with simple costumes, they have now blossomed into an elaborate production, complete with song and dance numbers.

“In the early 1990s, our anchors began to embrace the holiday more energetically, donning themed outfits and immersing themselves in iconic characters,” Mazzarelli explained. The 2024 episode showcased impressive character transformations, with Sheinelle Jones portraying Beyoncè, Savannah Guthrie as Miranda Priestly, and Craig Melvin taking on the role of Prince.
The planning process is intricate; Mazzarelli revealed that discussions with the production team and anchors begin in earnest during spring. Each year, producers strive to elevate the episode to new heights. “We start with a central theme and navigate through costume selections based on the interests and suggestions of our anchors,” he added.
Opting for a suitable theme requires both creativity and strategy. Mazzarelli mentioned that past experiences guide current decisions, particularly in avoiding any repeats of less successful themes. Notably, the widely ridiculed Peanuts-themed episode from a few years ago has served as a cautionary tale for the team. “We’ve learned our lesson from Peanuts year,” he admitted, humourously recalling the bizarre costumes that failed to resonate with audiences.
As the production ramps up during late summer, beginning around Labour Day, the process clearly involves contributions from the show’s anchors. Each cast member has input into their character selection, leading to a collaborative atmosphere. “It’s not uncommon for someone to come forward and say, ‘I want to be Beyoncé this year,’” Mazzarelli noted. This negotiation aspect keeps the process fluid as producers assess how to fit everyone’s ideas into the overarching theme.
The level of commitment from the anchors is noteworthy, as they engage in learning choreography and rehearsing sketches, often under pressure. Mazzarelli remarked that participation is extensive, as the anchors are not merely donning costumes but also performing sketches and learning songs. “This isn’t a walk in the park. It’s a major production and the anchors are integral to its success,” he remarked.
An added layer to this year’s celebration relates to a playful recognition of Craig Melvin’s title as PEOPLE’s Sexiest Morning TV Host. Mazzarelli confirmed that a clever incorporation of this accolade into Melvin’s costume is likely to add an extra touch of humour to the event.
The Halloween special’s roots can be traced back to the show’s early days, though it gathered momentum in the 1990s. “There’s always been a shout-out to Halloween, but the elaborate performances and costumes as we know them took off once we constructed the Plaza,” Mazzarelli explained. As he fondly recalled Katie Couric’s iconic flight across the Plaza as Peter Pan, it is clear that the commitment of past hosts laid the groundwork for the current phenomenon.
As the show gears up for this year’s episode on October 30th, Mazzarelli remains excited about the journey ahead. He amiably embraced the challenges associated with costume rights and thematic execution, confirming the event’s place as “by far, our biggest show of the year.”
For viewers, the ‘Today’ show’s Halloween extravaganza is not just another morning programme; it stands out as a celebration of creativity, teamwork, and the spirit of the season. As Mazzarelli aptly puts it, “We really lean into it, and the anchors appreciate the effort we go through to bring their visions to life.”
With that level of commitment and creativity, it is set to be another memorable Halloween episode, pleasing audiences across the country while elevating the show’s legacy in the ever-competitive morning television landscape.
