The Tasmania Police have confirmed that the search for Daryl Fong is still active, with the authorities being alerted to his disappearance on October 13. Inspector Luke Horne mentioned that Fong’s friend raised concerns about his well-being after failing to establish contact with him. Despite extensive search efforts in the area, Daryl remains unlocated as of now.

Fong’s white Subaru car was discovered in the Lake Dobson car park, where it is believed he commenced his trek. Reports suggest that Fong spent a night camping in his car before starting the Tarn Shelf Circuit, a trail spanning approximately seven and a half miles through the national park. Equipped with his camera, Fong set off on his journey to capture the beauty of the surroundings.
The search operation is facing significant challenges due to adverse weather conditions, including snow, rain, poor visibility, and near gale force winds. Inspector Horne noted that the search teams, comprising at least 30 individuals, including helicopter support, are encountering obstacles like knee to waist-deep snow in some areas, slowing down the search process.
Amidst the search efforts, friends of Fong have expressed deep distress over his disappearance. However, there is still hope for his safe return, considering his familiarity with outdoor activities. The authorities emphasised the critical need for appropriate shelter and equipment for survival in the harsh environment. They remain dedicated to locating Fong promptly and reuniting him with his family.
Inspector Horne urged anyone who may have seen Fong during his hike to come forward with information. With around 100 individuals reported to be in the Mt Field National Park area around the time of Fong’s trek, potential witnesses are encouraged to provide any details that could aid in the search operation. Various agencies, including Tasmania Police, Tasmania SES, Ambulance Tasmania, and Westpac Rescue Helicopter, are actively involved in the search mission.
The search for Daryl Fong continues with a plea for public assistance and vigilance. As the authorities press on with their efforts to locate the missing hiker, the community’s support and cooperation play a crucial role in ensuring a comprehensive search operation. The priority remains on finding Fong swiftly and safely bringing him back to his loved ones.
This news of the ongoing search for the missing hiker exemplifies the dedication of rescue teams in the face of challenging conditions. The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of outdoor activities and the importance of being well-prepared for any unforeseen circumstances. The community’s collective efforts and vigilance can greatly contribute to the success of search and rescue operations in such situations.
