The suspect in the shooting incident at the ABC Sacramento affiliate station, ABC10, now faces federal charges in addition to the state charges previously filed against him. Anibal Hernandez Santana, who had been released on bail relating to state charges, was booked again on federal charges following the shooting incident.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Eastern District of California, Hernandez Santana fired shots towards the ABC10 station, both into the air and directly into the building’s lobby. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, despite an ABC10 employee being in the lobby at the time of the shooting.
The shooting took place shortly after protesters gathered outside the station to object to the indefinite pull of Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!. While the show is set to return to air, it will not be broadcast on Sinclair stations, leaving questions surrounding any potential connection between the protest and the shooting.
Hernandez Santana was initially arrested by the Sacramento Police Department on state charges, including assault with a deadly weapon and other related offences. After being released on bail, he was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on federal charges, with additional details emerging during a search of his vehicle and home.
Law enforcement found a note in Hernandez Santana’s vehicle referencing FBI officials and an Attorney General, raising concerns about potential motivations behind the shooting incident. Subsequent searches of his person and home revealed further evidence that led to the filing of a three-count amended criminal complaint against him.
The complaint accuses Hernandez Santana of various offences, including possessing and discharging a firearm within a school zone, as well as interfering with a radio communication station. If convicted, he could face significant penalties, including prison time and substantial fines.
Mark Reichel, Hernandez Santana’s attorney, emphasised the importance of due process and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. The circumstances surrounding the case are under investigation, with both the media and the public eager for answers amidst the ongoing legal proceedings.
The case highlights the complexities of overlapping state and federal charges, underscoring the need for a thorough and fair legal process. As the investigation continues, authorities will work to uncover the motives and circumstances surrounding the shooting incident to ensure justice is served.
In a broader context, incidents like this serve as a reminder of the importance of upholding the rule of law and addressing instances of violence with swift and decisive legal action. The community awaits further developments in the case as law enforcement officials continue their efforts to bring clarity and closure to the situation.
