An 18-year-old from North Olmsted, Ohio, has been charged with murder following a tragic incident that unfolded in his family home. According to reports, Ameen Farraj is accused of fatally shooting his older brother, Abdulla Farraj, while attempting to protect their mother during a violent altercation. This event took place on Wednesday, September 16, just after 2:40 p.m.

Emergency services were alerted by a distressing 911 call made by the brothers’ sister. In the call, she reported, “My brother hit my mum and he got shot,” clarifying that it was her younger brother Ameen who had fired the weapon. She emphasised that Ameen had acted to defend her, their mother, and a cousin who were all caught in the altercation.
According to further reports, a second call was made by Ameen himself immediately after the shooting. He requested medical assistance for Abdulla, explaining to the dispatcher that his brother had been “trying to attack” their mother. When asked if he had shot Abdulla, Ameen confirmed, stating, “Yes. He was hitting my mum.” The dispatcher provided instructions for Ameen to apply pressure to Abdulla’s stomach wound while they awaited the arrival of first responders.
Tragically, despite efforts to save him, Abdulla was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to the hospital. Their mother was also taken to the hospital for treatment, having sustained injuries to her face during the altercation.
Ameen Farraj has been charged with murder, classified as a first-degree felony. He was arraigned the following day, on September 17, where his attorney requested a lower bond, arguing that Ameen had no previous criminal record and had acted purely in self-defence to protect his family. Nevertheless, the court set Ameen’s bond at an imposing $1 million, reflecting the seriousness of the charges against him. If convicted, he faces a potential sentence ranging from 15 years to life in prison.
Ameen’s legal representative, Issa Elkhatib, highlighted Abdulla’s history of violent behaviour, noting that he had previous arrests related to domestic violence and other offences. Elkhatib stated that Abdulla had long exhibited violent and verbally abusive tendencies towards his family, raising concerns about their safety. Reports indicate that Abdulla had also been diagnosed with schizophrenia, which may have contributed to his erratic behaviour on the day of the incident.
Court records indicate that Abdulla had faced three domestic violence charges since the beginning of 2023, in addition to other charges related to theft and obstructing official business. Despite this concerning history, the tragic outcome of the recent altercation has led to a deeply complex legal situation for Ameen.
