Three spectators were tragically killed after a race car veered off course at the Rallye de la Fourme d’Ambert in France, leaving the motorsport community in shock. The incident, which occurred on the morning of Saturday, July 26, claimed the lives of two brothers, aged 60 and 70, as well as a 44-year-old father, who were struck by the car during the event.

The driver, a 22-year-old woman, and her co-driver, a 51-year-old man, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were promptly taken to a local hospital for treatment. They were piloting a modified Peugeot 208, a popular European subcompact car, at the time of the tragic accident. Emergency responders, including 30 firefighters and several police officers, were swiftly dispatched to the scene to assist.

Despite efforts to save the victims, the 44-year-old man succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to a local hospital. The spectators were believed to have been positioned near red tape in a restricted area, but investigators are still working to determine the exact location where the tragedy unfolded. The local prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation, and both driver and co-driver are undergoing toxicology tests.
Following the devastating incident, race officials made the difficult decision to cancel the rally, bringing an abrupt end to the competition. The race management team announced the decision on Facebook, stating that all further events were called off and no awards would be presented to participants. This unforeseen turn of events has sent shockwaves through the motorsport community and has prompted a reevaluation of safety measures at such events.
In response to the tragedy, the Puy-de-Dôme prefecture has pledged a thorough investigation involving local and national law enforcement agencies to determine the circumstances of the accident. Support and condolences have poured in for the victims and their families, with local authorities expressing their deepest sympathies for those affected by the heartbreaking incident.
Sadly, this is not the first time such a tragedy has struck the rally. Last year, on July 27, a race steward lost his life in a similar accident while assisting a car that had gone off the road. The community of Saint-Just, where the race was held, has been left reeling from the consecutive disasters and Mayor François Chautard conveyed his profound sorrow for the families impacted by these incidents.
The rallying community mourns the loss of the three spectators and stands in solidarity during this difficult time. The safety of participants, bystanders, and staff at motorsport events is paramount, and this tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved in such high-speed competitions. As investigations continue, the motorsport world reflects on the importance of stringent safety protocols to prevent such devastating incidents in the future.
