A dangerous trend known as ‘dusting’ is on the rise, with more young individuals falling victim to the deadly consequences of inhaling computer keyboard cleaner. The practice, also referred to as “chroming” or “huffing,” involves inhaling the chemicals found in aerosol spray cans, typically used for cleaning keyboards, to achieve a temporary high. However, this reckless behaviour has resulted in serious illness and even death for some individuals.

The substances in keyboard cleaning aerosols can induce feelings of euphoria or drunkenness, but the act of inhaling them can lead to severe health complications such as heart or liver failure. Dr. Randy Weisman, who heads the ICU at HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center, highlighted the dangers of this practice, stating that inhaling these chemicals can replace oxygen in the body, leading to catastrophic outcomes.
Despite the accessibility of keyboard cleaning sprays, the consequences of ‘dusting’ can be fatal. Tragically, several individuals, including celebrities like Aaron Carter, have lost their lives as a result of abusing these substances. One such case involves Renna O’Rourke, a teenager from Arizona who died after succumbing to the effects of ‘dusting,’ prompting her parents to raise awareness about the dangers associated with this behaviour.
‘Dusting’ involves inhaling aerosol sprays that are primarily composed of various chemicals and gases, such as difluoroethane. This practice can induce sensations of being drunk, euphoric, hallucinogenic, or lightheaded. Studies have shown a concerning increase in the number of individuals being admitted to hospitals for injuries related to huffing and dusting, indicating the prevalence of this risky trend.
Apart from the risk of fatality, ‘dusting’ can have a range of adverse effects on individuals, including loss of consciousness leading to comas, seizures, nausea, breathing difficulties, loss of motor control, and vomiting. There is also the potential for “sudden sniffing death,” which can result from heart failure, particularly during the first instance of huffing. Identifying signs of participation in ‘dusting’ can involve observing empty aerosol cans, chemical-soaked rags, chemical residue, bloodshot eyes, or a hoarse voice.
Medical professionals have issued stern warnings about the dangers of ‘dusting,’ emphasizing that keyboard cleaners should never be inhaled. The potential consequences, including liver failure, heart issues, and lung disease, pose significant risks to individuals engaging in this harmful practice. The easy availability of these substances in households and stores further compounds the problem, making it accessible to both children and adults.
The devastating impact of ‘dusting’ has been felt by families across the UK, with notable cases like that of Aaron Carter and the late Renna O’Rourke serving as sombre reminders of the risks involved. The preventable loss of young lives due to this perilous trend underscores the urgent need for greater awareness and vigilance to safeguard individuals, particularly young people, from the dangers of substance abuse. As the repercussions of ‘dusting’ continue to unfold, it remains imperative for communities to come together to combat this hazardous practice and prevent further tragedies from occurring.
