In a heartfelt celebration of their extensive careers in journalism, Good Morning America co-anchors Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos received stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on November 5th. Both journalists have become household names in American television, and their early wake-up schedules reflect their commitment to their roles.

During a recent interview with Variety, the duo shared the surprisingly early hours they keep to prepare for the daily broadcast. Roberts, aged 65, has been a part of GMA since 2002 and became co-anchor in 2005. Stephanopoulos, also 65, joined her as co-anchor in 2009. As they recounted their routines, Roberts posed a question to Stephanopoulos, asking if his wake-up time had changed over the years. He revealed he now rises at 3:30 a.m., a slight improvement from his once 2:30 a.m. start, which stemmed from his initial nerves about the job.

Roberts also mentioned that her early mornings now begin at 3:45 a.m. She expressed a fondness for the quiet hours before the rest of the world wakes up, similar to Stephanopoulos. “I’m like George. I like the mornings, too,” she said. It seems that the early start has become deeply ingrained in their lives, with Roberts admitting to struggles sleeping in on weekends.
The pair’s synergy on screen appears to be rooted in both their shared experiences and their differing personalities. In the interview, Roberts noted that co-anchoring GMA was initially “outside our comfort zones”, which fostered a strong connection between them. Stephanopoulos remarked on their contrasting styles, suggesting that while they may seem like an “ultimate odd couple” on paper, their shared values and outlook on life unite them.
Their unique partnership was echoed by Roberts when she referenced a conversation she had with Mellody Hobson, who is married to filmmaker George Lucas. Hobson stated that although they are different, they never tried to change one another. Roberts reaffirmed this idea, stating, “I think that’s the key for us, too.”
The Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony featured co-anchor Michael Strahan as the emcee, with guests including actor Michael J. Fox and actress Niecy Nash-Betts. In a press release, Ana Martinez, producer for the Walk of Fame, commented on the significance of the honour. “They have become trusted voices in American journalism, connecting with audiences through their integrity, compassion, and commitment to storytelling,” she noted.
In his acceptance speech, Stephanopoulos expressed his gratitude for the experiences he has had while working at Good Morning America. He described the honour as an unexpected moment, reflecting on how each day feels special in his role. “This is one of those never could’ve imagined moments,” he said, emphasising the value of engaging with viewers across the nation.
Roberts shared in the sentiment, marvelling at the duo’s historical achievement as the longest-running team in morning television. “Wow… To think of us being here together on the Walk of Fame, that is a testament to our show, Good Morning America,” she expressed, highlighting the dedication of both their on-screen and behind-the-scenes teams.
As Roberts and Stephanopoulos continue to navigate the evolving landscape of journalism, their commitment to informing and uplifting audiences remains a defining aspect of their careers. The recognition from the Hollywood Walk of Fame not only celebrates their significant contributions but also serves as an inspiration for future generations in the field of broadcasting.
