In a significant safety alert, more than 3.6 million Little Giant ladders are being recalled due to a critical safety concern. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) made the announcement on 5 November, revealing that certain models of these ladders can unexpectedly retract, posing a serious risk of falls for users.

These ladders, which were sold at major retailers like Lowe’s, Costco, and Amazon, between December 2015 and October 2026, retail for approximately £100 to £1,000. The recalled products include a variety of models such as the Adjustable Fortress 2.0, Conquest 2.0, Dark Horse 2.0, Epic, King Kombo XT, Leveler, MegaLite, MegaLite+, Multi, Quantum, and Vector.

The CPSC’s warning stems from multiple consumer reports indicating that the ladders could retract when the “Rapid Locks” on the ladder legs are not securely engaged. These black or orange locks are intended to hold the ladder steady and adjustable in height, but when they malfunction, they can contribute to severe accidents.
Historical data revealed by Little Giant shows that there have been 25 incidents where the ladders unexpectedly retracted. This includes 19 injuries, with three reports detailing serious head trauma, including traumatic brain injuries, skull fractures, concussions, vision loss, and cognitive impairment. Furthermore, 16 other users reported less severe injuries such as bone fractures, lacerations, and various bruises linked to the ladder’s retraction issues.
In total, there have been 39 reported malfunctions related to the Rapid Locks, raising pressing concerns about the product’s design and safety features. The ladders involved in the recall do not have a specific orange rectangular “QC” sticker on the rail above the Rapid Locks, a crucial detail for consumers seeking to identify whether their ladder is affected.
Little Giant’s ladders have been widely available not only in physical stores but also via online platforms, including Lowes.com, Amazon.com, Costco.com, and the manufacturer’s own site, LittleGiantLadders.com. The wide distribution means that a significant number of consumers could be at risk if they have purchased one of the affected models.
Owners of the recalled ladders are advised to cease using them immediately and to visit the Little Giant recall website to find detailed instructions. Consumers can order a repair kit that contains necessary warning labels and information on ensuring the Rapid Locks are fully engaged prior to use. Users are also advised on how to maintain the locks, including proper lubrication to prevent future issues.
If consumers find that a Rapid Lock fails to operate correctly after following the guidelines, they have the option to receive either a replacement ladder of the same or a similar model or a full refund. The refund amount, however, will vary depending on when the ladder was purchased, with those bought within the last year eligible for a complete refund.
The CPSC advises concerned individuals to monitor updates related to the recall to ensure their safety. As the story continues to develop, Little Giant is expected to provide further insights and resolutions to affected customers.
Consumers are encouraged to remain vigilant about product recalls and safety notices, understanding that their precautions can prevent serious injuries. This incident highlights the importance of adhering to compliance standards in consumer products, particularly those associated with physical safety.
