Tyson Carter, a 41-year-old man from Long Island, recently underwent a groundbreaking surgery after his nose was bitten off during a heroic act of defending a woman from harassment. The incident took place at a bus stop in Brentwood, N.Y., where Carter intervened to help a young woman who was being harassed by two men on January 27. Unfortunately, the situation escalated into a physical altercation, leading to one of the men biting off Carter’s nose. Despite the brutal attack, Carter remained resilient, recalling the harrowing moment when he realized the extent of his injuries. “It was two-on-one and they stomped on my head and chest,” Carter recounted. “But I wasn’t going down. I guess he got frustrated. I knew he bit my nose. My jacket was bloody [but] I didn’t realize how bad it was.”
After seeking medical attention at Northwell Health’s South Shore University Hospital, it was confirmed that Carter’s nose had indeed been completely severed. However, thanks to the expertise of Dr. Laurent Ganry, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon at Northwell Health’s Jewish Medical Center, Carter was offered a unique solution to restore his facial features. Dr. Ganry employed a combination of an ancient Egyptian technique and cutting-edge technology to reconstruct a new nose for Carter. The innovative approach involved creating a 3D print of Carter’s face and crafting a clay nose model based on his past selfies as a template for the reconstruction process.

By meticulously extracting skin and muscle from Carter’s forearm and forehead, Dr. Ganry successfully orchestrated a series of three surgeries to recreate Carter’s nose. Remarkably, new blood vessels have since developed in the transplanted tissues, signifying the success and viability of the new appendage. While the procedure itself harks back to practices dating back to ancient Egypt, the incorporation of modern advancements in medical technology has significantly enhanced the outcome and quality of life for individuals like Carter who have suffered traumatic facial injuries.
For Carter, the surgery has not only restored his physical appearance but also his self-assurance and everyday functionality. He shared how the transformation has been so seamless that even his close friends are hardly able to discern any changes. Reflecting on the impact of the surgery, Carter expressed gratitude for being able to wear his glasses again, enabling him to see clearly and navigate daily tasks with ease. Although he views the procedure as a “once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing,” Dr. Ganry and the medical team continue to perform similar reconstructive surgeries for individuals who have lost their noses due to various circumstances, underscoring their commitment to restoring not just physical features but also dignity and confidence.
The intricate nature of the surgery and the significance it holds in Carter’s life underscore the resilience and innovation present in the medical field. Such transformative interventions not only offer hope and healing to individuals like Carter but also exemplify the profound impact of merging ancient wisdom with modern advancements to address complex medical challenges. As Carter embraces his newfound confidence and normalcy, his journey serves as a beacon of resilience and renewal, reaffirming the power of medical expertise and compassion in restoring lives and empowering individuals to reclaim their sense of self.
