Idaho Mother Facing Trial for Allegedly Conspiring to Kill Fourth Husband Makes Opening Statements in Arizona Courtroom
Lori Vallow Daybell, the now infamous Idaho woman convicted of murdering her two children, made a poignant opening statement in an Arizona courtroom as she faces trial for allegedly plotting to kill her fourth husband. Representing herself, Lori addressed the jury on Monday, April 7, denying any involvement in the murder of her estranged husband, Charles Vallow, in 2019 for his $1 million life insurance policy, as prosecutors have claimed.
In a heartfelt address, Lori emphasised that having insurance policies between spouses is not a crime and asserted that self-defense should not be considered a criminal act. She went on to underline that what happened was a family tragedy, not a deliberate criminal act. The tragic incident occurred when Charles was fatally shot twice in the chest by Lori’s brother, Alex Cox, at Lori’s home in Chandler, Arizona, on July 11, 2019. Cox, who argued self-defense, was never charged and passed away from natural causes in December 2019.
On the day of the killing, Lori recounted that Charles arrived at her Chandler home in a rental car, entered the house, and a confrontation ensued, leading to a physical altercation involving her daughter Tylee Ryan and Charles. Lori claimed that during the struggle, Alex intervened, resulting in a scuffle between the men over a baseball bat. She described a harrowing moment where Charles allegedly pursued her with the bat as she fled into the kitchen.
Prosecutors, during their opening statements, contended that Lori orchestrated Charles’ death to claim his insurance proceeds in furtherance of marrying her fifth husband, Chad Daybell, an author known for his religious apocalyptic writings. Among the motives outlined, prosecutors mentioned financial gains through life insurance, social security benefits, and other advantages that would accrue to Lori and her son in the event of Charles Vallow’s demise.
Prior to the tragic incident, Charles had reportedly expressed concerns about Lori’s mental state, recounting instances where she demonstrated signs of instability and allegedly threatened his life. Body camera footage obtained by ABC News revealed Charles’ fears about Lori’s mental well-being, shedding light on the events leading up to the fatal altercation in 2019.
Lori is currently serving a life sentence without parole for the murders of her children, Joshua “J.J.” Vallow and Tylee, who disappeared in September 2019 and were later discovered buried on Chad Daybell’s property in Idaho. The grim discoveries unearthed in June 2020 painted a horrific picture of the children’s fates, with Tylee’s remains dismembered and burned, and J.J. found wrapped in plastic and bound with duct tape.
Moreover, Lori was convicted of conspiracy in the murder of Chad’s previous wife, Tammy Daybell, who died from asphyxiation in October 2019. Chad Daybell subsequently faced charges for the deaths of his wife and Lori’s children, J.J. and Tylee, drawing further attention to the complex web of crimes involving the intertwined lives of the accused.
