Prince Harry recently shared a touching moment with his son, Archie, where he discussed the legacy of his late mother, Princess Diana. The conversation initially started as an explanation of the Invictus Games, but it took a heartfelt turn towards Princess Diana’s important work.

During the 2025 Invictus Games, the Duke of Sussex spoke with CTV about how he explained the adaptive sporting competition for sick, wounded, and injured service personnel and veterans to his young children, 5-year-old Prince Archie and 3-year-old Princess Lilibet. Prince Harry mentioned, “Archie was asking about landmines, so I was talking about how some of these guys [participants] were blown up.”
The conversation then shifted to Princess Diana, who famously walked through a landmine field in Angola in 1997 to raise awareness of the issue. Prince Harry shared, “Interestingly, it gave me a chance to talk about my mum, his grandma, which I didn’t even really consider. He wanted to see videos and photographs of his Grandma Diana out doing her thing for landmines all those years ago.”
Twenty-two years after Princess Diana’s historic visit, Prince Harry followed in his mother’s footsteps by making a similar walk to clear dangerous landmines around the world. In September 2019, he visited a Halo Trust mine site in Angola, wearing protective gear like his mother did. He also visited the now-thriving community where his mother walked, marked by a tree named the Diana Tree.
Despite Princess Diana’s passing in 1997, Prince Harry has made sure to keep her memory alive with his children. He revealed in the AppleTV+ docuseries ‘The Me You Can’t See’ that Princess Diana’s photo is displayed in Archie’s nursery, and one of his first words was “Grandma Diana.”
Along with sharing his mother’s legacy, Prince Harry also educates his children about the work he does for the Invictus Games. He mentioned showing Archie videos of wheelchair basketball and rugby from the Invictus Games in Sydney, explaining the different challenges that participants face.
The Duke of Sussex emphasized the importance of having open and honest conversations with children, stating, “Kids understand so much, and to see it through his eyes was amazing because it’s so unfiltered and honest.” By involving his children in his humanitarian work and his mother’s legacy, Prince Harry is instilling important values in the younger generation.
In a world where royal families often seem distant and unrelatable, Prince Harry’s candid moments with his children humanize the royals and showcase the importance of family bonds and preserving legacy. The touching exchange between Prince Harry and Archie serves as a reminder of the enduring impact of Princess Diana’s compassion and advocacy, as her legacy continues to inspire future generations.
