Initial findings from a post-mortem examination revealed that Phythian was pregnant at the time of the incident. During a court hearing, Judge Geraint Walters confirmed that she was alive when the van was set ablaze. “At the time of ignition the person was alive,” the judge stated, highlighting the brutal nature of the crime, which led to Phythian’s tragic demise.

Thomas Bell, aged 38, from Rhyl, has since been charged with murder in connection with her death. He appeared via video link during a hearing at Mold Crown Court, where he confirmed his identity but denied any involvement in setting the vehicle on fire. Bell has been remanded in custody and is scheduled for a plea and preparation hearing at Caernarfon Crown Court later in November. A provisional trial date has been set for early April 2027, according to reports.
In a development that underscores the complexity of the investigation, police announced that a second man, aged 47, had also been arrested. He is suspected of conspiracy to commit arson and possession with intent to supply drugs, although his identity has not been disclosed. This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to piece together the details of this alarming case.
The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on the night of October 4, when emergency services responded to reports of a vehicle fire close to an industrial estate and retail park on Gas Works Lane, Prestatyn. Upon arrival, they discovered the van and the unfortunate situation involving Phythian.
Phythian’s family released a heartfelt statement, expressing their grief over her untimely passing. Describing her as a “much loved Mum, daughter, sister, Auntie and friend,” they conveyed their devastation at the loss, noting the profound impact she had on those around her. They added that while her life was cruelly cut short, the cherished memories and love she shared would endure.
In light of the tragic circumstances, the family implored the public to avoid sharing unfounded rumours regarding Phythian’s death on social media. “As a family, we would like to ask people to be mindful and respectful of rumours circulating over social media platforms at this devastating time,” they remarked, emphasising the emotional toll such speculation can take.
Detective Chief Inspector Zoie Dunkerley, leading the investigation, stated that the police are actively pursuing every available lead. “Our investigations into this incident are moving at pace, and we are currently exploring every avenue of information open to us,” she remarked, encouraging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
