The three children of a fugitive father in New Zealand, who was shot by police this week after evading authorities for almost four years, are reportedly coping well, according to officials. Warwick Morehu from Oranga Tamariki (Ministry for Children) stated, “I can confirm the children had a settled night, they are doing well under the circumstances and engaging with the staff supporting them.”

Tom Phillips vanished with his children, Jayda (12), Maverick (10), and Ember (9), following an alleged altercation with their mother in 2021. Phillips had been a fugitive since December of the same year and had been reportedly hiding in the wilderness. The New Zealand Police confirmed his fatal shooting in Waikato, the upper North Island, after a suspected burglary in Piopio.

Following the incident, the authorities confirmed that the two children found at the scene were unharmed and in a safe place. Phillips’ third child, who was present at the time of the shooting, was already in police custody. Acting Deputy Commissioner Jill Rogers updated on Tuesday that the siblings had been reunited and were under the care of the Oranga Tamariki.

Warwick Morehu, Oranga Tamariki and Whānau Services Regional Commissioner, provided reassurance about the children’s well-being, stating, “I can confirm the children had a settled night, they are doing well under the circumstances and engaging with the staff supporting them.” He emphasized the dedication of the team involved in responding to the children’s needs and ensuring they receive the necessary support.
The authorities and partner agencies are working together to address any requirements the children might have and have allocated clinical professionals to assist if needed. Privacy has been requested for the children despite the significant public interest in the case. The focus is on helping the children transition back to a semblance of normalcy while considering their individual needs and timeframe.
New Zealand Police released images of the campsite where Phillips and his children had been hiding before the fatal encounter. The site, located in Waitomo, was close to the scene of the shooting, which resulted in an officer sustaining serious injuries. Various items, including firearms, were recovered at the campsite, with further investigations ongoing to gather more information.
The mother of the children, Cat, expressed her anticipation of welcoming her children home with love and care after nearly four years of separation. Staff members described the children as engaged and responsive, providing them with comfort as they awaited relocation from the campsite. Efforts are being made to understand the movements of Phillips and the children through interactions with locals and investigations at the locations they frequented.
The tragic event has drawn attention to the complexities of the situation and the emotional toll on the children involved. As the authorities continue their inquiries and support the children’s well-being, the community is hopeful for a positive outcome for the youngsters affected by the challenging circumstances.
