David Geffen, the 82-year-old billionaire and former record executive, is currently entangled in a legal battle with his estranged husband, Donovan Michaels, 32. Michaels, also known as David Armstrong, has filed a lawsuit accusing Geffen of failing to uphold their agreement of providing “lifelong support,” following their decision to divorce after less than two years of marriage. The lawsuit was officially filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court on July 22.
The court documents reveal that Donovan Michaels is claiming that Geffen has violated both an “express oral contract” and an “implied contract” by withholding “full financial support” from him after the couple separated on April 25, 2025. Michaels’ legal team alleges that not only did Geffen evict him, but he also ceased providing the financial support that Michaels had been accustomed to during their relationship.

In response to the lawsuit, Geffen’s lawyer, Patty Glaser, vehemently denies the existence of any contract, be it written, oral, or implied. Glaser stated, “We will be vigorously and righteously defending against this false, pathetic lawsuit.” The legal dispute sheds light on the aftermath of the couple’s separation and the disagreement over financial support.
The situation further escalated when Geffen filed for divorce from Michaels on May 16, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split. Surprisingly, it was revealed that the couple did not have a prenuptial agreement in place before tying the knot in March 2023. The divorce filing listed their date of separation as February 22, 2025, indicating a relatively recent development that led to the legal proceedings.
David Geffen’s illustrious career in the music industry includes co-founding Asylum Records in 1971, followed by establishing Geffen Records in 1980 and DGC Records in 1990. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in founding DreamWorks Records in 1996. Despite his retirement, Geffen remains one of the wealthiest individuals, with estimates of his net worth ranging from $8.7 billion to over $9.1 billion, as reported by Forbes and the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, ranking him among the world’s wealthiest individuals.
The legal dispute between Geffen and Michaels has garnered significant attention due to Michaels’ claims regarding the nature of their relationship. Michaels alleges that what initially started as a transactional relationship evolved into a commitment where Geffen assured him of lifelong financial support and equal asset sharing. However, Michaels now seeks redress, claiming that Geffen has failed to honour their agreements after their separation.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the case not only delves into the intricacies of the relationship between Geffen and Michaels but also highlights the power dynamics at play. Michaels’ legal representation has emphasised the disparity in wealth and influence between the parties, portraying a narrative of exploitation and betrayal. The lawsuit underscores the complexities of personal relationships, particularly in high-profile cases involving significant assets.
The outcome of this legal battle between David Geffen and Donovan Michaels remains uncertain, as both parties present conflicting accounts of their relationship and commitments. The lawsuit signifies a turbulent chapter in their lives, shedding light on the challenges faced in navigating personal and financial dynamics during a divorce. Amidst the public scrutiny, the case serves as a reminder of the complexities of relationships and the legal implications that arise in such circumstances.
