Actor Nicolas Cage has revealed that he is currently residing in hotels following significant damage to his Malibu home caused by a sinkhole. At a panel during L.A. Comic Con on Halloween, the 62-year-old star shared, “I’m currently a little bit homeless. Something happened to my house in Malibu, so I’m just sort of living in hotels.”

Cage’s sudden change in living arrangements has also disrupted his Halloween plans with his four-year-old daughter, August, whom he shares with his wife, Riko Shibata. The situation is particularly disappointing for the actor, who expressed his longing to enjoy traditional trick-or-treating festivities with his daughter. Instead, they are set to venture out to Santa Monica for their Halloween celebrations, under markedly different circumstances than they might have hoped.

“I don’t have normal trick-or-treaters that I would like to enjoy tonight,” Cage stated. He later added a personal touch to his evening plans, saying, “After I put my daughter to bed, I’m going to put on *The Shining*,” a film famed for its director Stanley Kubrick, who ironically was nominated for a Razzies award for Worst Director for his work.
The sinkhole incident that has caused such disruption occurred a month ago, revealing itself as a serious concern for both Cage and the local community. Reports have indicated that the sinkhole developed in the driveway of his residence and extended to the nearby roadway. Images of the site show a considerable cavity, with the section of the driveway completely caved in and a visible collapse stretching toward the beach.
A proclamation issued by the City of Malibu on September 8 declared a state of emergency in response to the sinkhole, which has been reported to be approximately 25 feet deep and spanning an area of 30 by 60 feet. The notice described the situation as posing an imminent danger to the surrounding properties and their residents.
In light of the emergency, seven homes in the area were “red-tagged,” indicating serious safety concerns that rendered them unsafe for habitation. Additionally, another 24 homes have been warned due to compromised access, significantly impacting the local community.
The aftermath of the sinkhole led to the suspension of gas services in the vicinity, with officials alerting residents that water service could also face interruptions as conditions evolved. The onset of the sinkhole appears to have coincided with intense flooding in Southern California attributed to Hurricane Marie, which resulted in elevated tides and significant coastal conditions.
Cage’s experience is not just a matter of personal upheaval, but it also highlights the broader challenges posed by extreme weather and natural land shifts that can drastically affect local residents. His predicament sheds light on the often unpredictable challenges faced by homeowners in vulnerable areas.
As Cage continues to navigate this unexpected chapter in his life, it underlines the resilience often required in the wake of natural disasters. Meanwhile, with Halloween now behind him, the actor will no doubt be hoping for a speedy resolution to his housing situation and a return to normalcy for his family.
