U.S. Figure Skaters Deliver Heartfelt Performance in Honour of D.C. Plane Crash Victims

United States figure skaters, Alisa Efimova and Misha Mitrofanov, gave an emotional and poignant performance at the 2025 World Figure Skating Championships in Boston. The duo skated in remembrance of the skaters who tragically lost their lives in the D.C. plane crash earlier this year. As they completed their free skate routine at the TD Garden in Boston, the skaters were overwhelmed with emotion, a moment that will forever remain etched in their memories.
Efimova and Mitrofanov, who have trained in Boston for part of their careers, delivered a touching performance that moved the audience. After their final lift, Efimova embraced her partner, tears streaming down her face. Mitrofanov urged her to look around at the crowd, who rose to their feet in appreciation of the emotional tribute. The duo ultimately secured the 4th place in the event, clinching the 6th position overall and ensuring their participation in the final Olympic qualifying event leading up to the 2026 Olympics in Milan.
Expressing her deep emotions, Efimova shared with the hosts, “I have no words to explain what I’m feeling right now. Thank you, TD Garden. Thank you, Boston.” The night was not only significant for the skaters but also for the city, as they paid tribute to the lives lost in the tragic plane crash. The skating community mourned the loss of 14 individuals on January 29 when American Airlines flight 5342 tragically crashed into a military aircraft near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, resulting in no survivors.
Mitrofanov and Efimova, like other skaters at the championships, carried pictures of the victims with them as they awaited their results, showing their respect and unity with the fallen skaters. Mitrofanov expressed gratitude for the support, noting, “It feels like a family; we’ve all come together. We’re very blessed to train there.” The duo found solace in the overwhelming support from the crowd, especially from members of The Skating Club of Boston, where the tragedy hit close to home.
For Efimova and Mitrofanov, the night was about honouring the city and the people who held a special place in their hearts. Efimova reflected on the experience, stating, “This is a memory I will now keep forever. It’s such a deep feeling right now here. It’s so warm.” The performance not only showcased their skating talent but also their resilience and their ability to turn tragedy into a heartfelt tribute that resonated deeply with the audience.
