After a pause of two years, the holiday toy drive entitled “Christmas Is Not Cancelled,” spearheaded by actress Jen Lilley, is back and aims to distribute 20,000 presents to children in need by the 17th of December. The initiative, which has previously instigated significant support from both celebrities and the public, is now registered as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organisation, allowing for tax-deductible donations.

The campaign is refreshed for the 2023 holiday season and commenced on 1 November, with Lilley expressing her excitement about its return. “I honestly haven’t stopped smiling,” she told PEOPLE. “Bringing Christmas Is Not Cancelled back feels like my own Christmas miracle.” Lilley, best known for her role in Hallmark’s Christmas in July movie, emphasised that the demand for the initiative from supporters never waned, motivating her to reclaim this tradition.

A noteworthy highlight of the campaign’s relaunch comes from podcaster Shawn Ryan, who made a substantial contribution of $30,000 directed towards procuring bikes and scooters, items that can often be difficult to secure as gifts for children. Lilley noted that these gifts are particularly meaningful, stating, “When children receive something they truly desire, it creates lasting memories.”
The initiative began in response to the challenges posed by the pandemic, stemming from a light-hearted conversation where Lilley remarked, “They’d better not cancel Christmas.” This remark sparked a deeper consideration about the reality for many families, leading her to create the initiative. Initially, she aimed to distribute 10,000 gifts but quickly realised the powerful impact of the generosity displayed by donors across the country. Lilley recounted, “Most people couldn’t give $1,000, but a lot could give $15 for a book. Those contributions, no matter the size, mattered in creating something significant.”
Growing over the past few years, the toy drive expanded to distribute around 25,000 toys and books annually. This year, Lilley’s team is working towards a target of 20,000 presents. “One of my favourite aspects of partnering with Toys for Tots is that parents often get to select the gifts themselves, which helps maintain a sense of dignity,” she explained.
In mirroring the sentiment of community and compassion, Ryan highlighted his involvement by stating, “Supporting our next generation and helping disadvantaged youth has long been a personal mission of mine. If this effort can bring a smile to these children and make a meaningful impact on their lives, participating is a clear choice.” His dedication is emblematic of a wider commitment within the community to uplift those in need during the festive season.
To incentivise participation in the campaign, Lilley introduced a series of prize draws, encouraging donors to contribute with a chance to win a selection of various prizes. “The Ultimate Christmas,” as she refers to the grand prize, is intended to reflect the essence of her holiday movies, minus the romantic lead. Various weekly prizes include themed movie nights celebrating classic films and delightful festive decor items.
Each week of the campaign offers unique rewards. The first week, for instance, celebrates the release of the Jimmy Stewart biopic, “Jimmy,” and includes a movie night package that features items like a signed shooting script and tickets for a cinema experience. Following weeks will feature Christmas wreaths, baking kits, and tree decorations as rewards for contributions.
With the initiative running through mid-December, Lilley encourages the public to visit the official “Christmas Is Not Cancelled” website for more information and to partake in what she hopes will be a fulfilling season for all involved. She expressed her gratitude towards the community, stating, “This Christmas, everyone gets a chance to be someone’s George Bailey,” referencing the beloved character from the classic film “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
Through Lilley’s leadership and the contributions from generous supporters, the mission remains clear: to bring joy and hope to children who may otherwise experience disappointment during the festive period.
