Shirley Ballas, the esteemed ballroom dancer and head judge on the popular series “Strictly Come Dancing,” has expressed her opinions on a long-ago cameo in the television show “Gilmore Girls.” Reflecting on her appearance during a recent interview, Ballas offered candid criticism of the portrayal of her character and the inaccuracies surrounding her dance expertise.

In the 2003 episode titled “Ballrooms and Biscotti,” Ballas appears as herself alongside her then-husband, Corky Ballas. During a scene, Emily Gilmore, played by Kelly Bishop, tells her granddaughter Rory, portrayed by Alexis Bledel, about the dancing duo. Emily describes their talents and mentions Corky is writing a musical based on their lives as ballroom champions. While the characters are engrossed in a ballroom performance on TV, Emily praises them, stating, “Oh, look! The couple in the purple feathers, that’s Corky and Shirley Ballas — I love them. They are so talented.”

However, Ballas, now 66, had a different take on the scene when she revisited it after appearing as a guest judge on the October 27 episode of “Dancing with the Stars.” She pointed out some clear discrepancies in the dialogue and visuals presented in the episode. Ballas observed that while the characters speak of ballroom dancing, they were actually showing a quickstep— a dance style she never performed.
“They’re actually showing a quickstep, and we never danced waltz, foxtrot, tango, or quickstep — we danced the Latin dances: Cha-cha, rumba, samba, paso doble, and jive,” Ballas explained, emphasising the inaccuracy of the portrayal.
Moreover, she questioned the writers’ decision regarding the musical. “And the fact that Corky was writing a musical? I don’t know where she got that from, but that never happened,” Ballas remarked, shedding light on the fictional liberties taken by the show’s creators.
The reference to ‘Corky Jr.’, whom Emily claimed would portray his father in the musical, further raised Ballas’ eyebrows. She jokingly referred to Mark Ballas, the couple’s son, stating, “Yeah, cute,” in a nod to his successful career as a professional dancer on “Dancing with the Stars,” where he has won three Mirrorball trophies.
Shirley and Corky Ballas were a formidable dancing duo who gained fame after meeting in the mid-1980s. They won numerous championships together, and their relationship went beyond the dance floor, fostering a family legacy in the dance industry. However, the couple divorced in 2007, yet they continued to play significant roles in shaping the careers of many dancers on shows like “Dancing with the Stars,” including siblings Derek and Julianne Hough.
Reflecting on her relationship with her son Mark, Shirley shared how their professional connections continued to thrive. “Whenever I want a very straight, honest, direct opinion about my own work, that’s the first call I make,” Mark remarked about seeking his mother’s guidance on his performances.
As Shirley Ballas takes her dance expertise to the judges’ panel every week, her ongoing contributions to the industry remain undeniable. Her recent reflections on “Gilmore Girls” serve as a reminder of the challenges and misinterpretations often faced in the world of entertainment.
While her cameo was seemingly a light-hearted nod to the glamour of ballroom dancing, Ballas’ critique offers a deeper insight into the realities behind the art form she has dedicated her life to. As she continues to share moments both on and off the dance floor, her influence remains strong, ensuring that the next generation of dancers benefits from her wealth of knowledge and experience.
