A young man from Texas tragically lost his life while scaling the Matterhorn in Switzerland on October 27. Kieran Liner, a 20-year-old resident of Austin, was climbing the renowned peak with his friend Eli Hawkins when the accident occurred, leading to heartache and mourning among friends and family.

According to a statement from the Valais Cantonal Police released on October 28, Liner was approximately 11,500 feet into the ascent when the incident took place. Swiss officials reported that rockfalls were the cause of the accident. Hawkins, who was climbing alongside him, subsequently lost sight of Liner and raised the alarm when he failed to respond.

Liner’s sister, Precenia Newman, shared the devastating news on a GoFundMe page created to assist with transporting her brother’s body back to the United States and covering funeral expenses. In an interview with CBS Austin, she described her brother’s vibrant passion for life. She said Liner embodied a lust for adventure, having transitioned from indoor bouldering to outdoor climbing upon moving from Florida to Texas.
In a conversation with their mother the day prior to the climb, Liner reassured her, stating, “Hey mum, nothing’s going to happen. But if something were to happen, I’d die doing what I love, and I want you to know that.” This somber prelude to the tragedy highlights the young climber’s adventurous spirit.
Newman recounted the moments following the accident, explaining that Hawkins reported the occurrence of a rockfall, followed by the realisation that he could no longer see Liner. “He called out for him, but there was no response,” she said.
In her heartfelt tribute on the fundraising page, Newman articulated the profound sense of loss felt by those who knew him. She detailed her brother’s diverse interests and character, stating, “Kieran was more than just the circumstances of his passing. He was a son, brother, uncle, friend, skateboarder, golfer, and a passionate young alpinist.” She lamented his loss, emphasising that at only 20 years old, he had so much potential ahead of him.
The loss of someone so young and vibrant is a heartbreaking experience, which Newman reflected upon in her accompanying message of remembrance. “Losing someone so young, so suddenly, and so far from home is something no family can ever prepare for,” she wrote, affirming Liner’s lasting impact on those who loved him.
Additionally, Hawkins, deeply affected by the event, posted a tribute on Instagram, sharing memories that showcased their close bond. Labeling Liner as his best friend, climbing partner, and brother, Hawkins described the pain of losing him during their ascent: “He took a big fall and didn’t make it,” he expressed, adding that the loss was more challenging than anything he had ever experienced.
Despite the sorrow, Hawkins expressed a desire to honour Liner’s memory by continuing to climb, stating, “It makes me feel better he died doing what he loved, and I’m glad that I was there with him so he wasn’t alone.”
Liner’s untimely death serves as a lingering reminder of the inherent risks involved in mountaineering, particularly in challenging environments like the Matterhorn. As friends and family grapple with the weight of their grief, Liner will be remembered as someone who lived life to the fullest and passionately embraced the outdoors.
A vibrant young life has been cut short, leaving behind a legacy of adventure and cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of those who knew Kieran Liner.
