Michael Douglas has offered an update on his long-time friend, Jack Nicholson, revealing that the legendary actor is doing well despite rarely being seen in public. Nicholson, 89, has been notably absent from the screen since his last film role in 2010’s *How Do You Know*. Douglas, now 82, expressed his regret that they never had the opportunity to share the screen, despite their remarkable history as close friends dating back to the 1975 film *One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest*, which Douglas produced. He reflected on this missed chance during the event, stating, “I would have liked to have acted with Jack. He’s not working any more. He’s well. He has disappeared. I know that.”

In his update, Douglas mentioned that he still keeps in touch with Nicholson. “He is up there by his house and walking around in his slippers,” he reported, adding that he fully understands Nicholson’s choice to retreat from public life. “It happens. He deserves it. I understand. He is a few years older than me, but I understand,” Douglas remarked.

The friendship between Douglas and Nicholson has been significant in the film industry, particularly highlighted by their collaboration on *One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest*, which became a staple of cinematic history. Douglas has frequently praised Nicholson’s talent, recalling how he encouraged others in the cast to give their best performances. He mentioned a memorable scene in the film where Nicholson’s character inspires the other patients to rally around a baseball game, a testament to Nicholson’s innate ability to energise and inspire those around him.
The film itself was a monumental success, being nominated for nine Academy Awards and securing five, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Nicholson. This success solidified both actors’ places in Hollywood history and is a significant touchstone in their long-standing friendship.
Nicholson’s rare public appearances over the last few years have further underscored his retirement from acting. He last stepped into the spotlight in February 2025 when he introduced Adam Sandler at the *SNL50: The Anniversary Special*. Prior to that, the actor was seen attending an NBA playoff game in April 2023, where he jovially interacted with basketball star LeBron James, eliciting warm reactions from fans.
Douglas’s affectionate remarks about Nicholson remind fans of the camaraderie and respect within Hollywood. Their shared history continues to resonate with audiences, sending a message of warmth and friendship amid the competitive nature of the film industry.
As both actors age, their legacy endures, rooted in the memorable characters and stories they have brought to life over the decades. With Douglas’s recent update, fans of Nicholson can find solace in knowing that their beloved star is content, enjoying life away from the cameras.
