The Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) is on the hunt for a group of thieves responsible for a shocking theft involving 3,000 pounds of frozen snow crab. This unusual incident unfolded in the early hours of Tuesday, 20th October, along Island Avenue, where a tractor-trailer was targeted while its driver was asleep inside the vehicle.

According to reports from local media outlets, the drama began at approximately 4:50 a.m. when the driver, identified as Marty Muriuki, was jolted awake by the sensation of movement within the cab of his truck. Alarmed, Muriuki opened his eyes to discover that he was not alone as a band of six individuals were loading boxes of snow crab into a pickup truck parked nearby.
Muriuki recounted the moments of confusion and alarm, telling NBC Philadelphia, “As I was dreaming, I felt the shaking and I [woke] up and I [thought] ‘Uh oh. I have some company.’” He quickly realised the gravity of the situation when he glanced back and saw multiple vehicles surrounding his truck.
Determined to confront the intruders, Muriuki exited his truck. However, he was met with aggression from one of the thieves who chased him away. “One guy said, ‘We’ll pay you,’ and then all of a sudden one guy charged at me so I [had] to run from that corner all the way to the Residence Inn,” Muriuki recalled, describing his frantic escape.
The robbers managed to load 50 boxes of snow crab, each weighing around 30 pounds, into their vehicles during the chaotic encounter. Police reports indicate that the thieves made their getaway in several cars, including a grey Ford F-150 and a grey Dodge Caravan, efficiently disappearing with an estimated 3,000 pounds of seafood.
Witnesses described two of the thieves as wearing dark clothing; one man was approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall and the other stood around 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighed roughly 180 pounds. PPD has assured the public that an investigation is ongoing, and they are actively working to identify and apprehend the suspects involved.
In light of this incident, police officials have issued a warning to truck drivers, especially those who may be sleeping while awaiting morning deliveries. Previous occurrences of similar nature have raised concerns about the safety of drivers, with police urging them to remain vigilant during their breaks.
As this bizarre story garnered media attention, it stirred conversations about the vulnerability of truck drivers, who often work long hours and face various challenges while on the road. There is a growing concern regarding the targeting of these individuals by criminals, particularly when they are fatigued.
The theft has not only raised eyebrows but also highlights the broader issue of safety for those working within the logistics and transportation industry. Representatives from various truck driving organisations have echoed the police’s sentiments, emphasising the importance of precautions and awareness among drivers during their downtime.
As the investigation continues, the community around Philadelphia watches closely, hoping for answers and the swift resolution of what has turned into a rather audacious crime. The ordeal faced by Marty Muriuki serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that truck drivers encounter and the potential dangers lurking when they least expect it.
With the PPD appealing for any information from the public, there is hope that those responsible for this unusual and significant theft will be brought to justice. The search for the stolen snow crab, an unexpected and valuable target, is far from over as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the heist.
