Megan Moroney, the rising country music star, has shared an unexpected anecdote from her life that recently caught the attention of fans and fellow musicians alike. During a conversation with Alex Warren for Rolling Stone’s Musicians on Musicians segment, Moroney recounted the unusual experience of hearing her own hit single “I’m Not Pretty” while undergoing a full-body laser hair removal treatment.

The 29-year-old singer described the surreal moment, confessing, “I was getting zapped in places you shouldn’t be zapped.” The unexpected soundtrack to her rather personal appointment turned out to be one of her successful tracks from 2023. “I just heard that, and I was like, ‘Okay,’” she chuckled, highlighting the strange nature of such a private experience coinciding with her music.

Warren, who is also a musician and YouTuber, chimed in with his own amusing story. He recalled an incident where police officers were playing his song “Ordinary” while he was on Warren Street — an ironic twist considering the street shares his name. “The cop in their car was playing ‘Ordinary,’ which was pretty rad,” he noted, drawing a smile from Moroney.
Moroney’s ability to transform personal experiences into relatable music has been a hallmark of her career. She initially gained wide recognition for her breakout single “Tennessee Orange,” which reflects her experience of falling for a University of Tennessee fan despite her loyalty to the Georgia Bulldogs. The song reached remarkable success, achieving five-time platinum status.
Her distinct style, often termed “emo cowgirl,” blends genuine emotional narratives with a spirited, feminine aesthetic. Following her debut, Moroney continued to establish herself in the country music scene with her albums, “Lucky” and “Am I Okay?”, the latter featuring the platinum-certified single “Am I Okay?” Her music captures a mixture of heartache and humour, resonating with a broad audience.
Recently, Moroney has been focused on her latest album, “Cloud 9,” after touring extensively abroad. Expressing a desire for a change in pace, she conveyed in the interview her plans for a brief hiatus from large-scale performances. “I have a few shows at the end of this year, just a few one-off things, no tour or anything,” she explained. “But I’m really just trying to live life.”
During this downtime, Moroney is prioritising the creative process for her next album. “I need to be able to have material for my next album,” she elaborated, suggesting a need for introspection and simplicity after the hustle of touring. She whimsically referred to a new nickname for her larger-than-life stage persona, dubbing it “Megarina,” jokingly highlighting the shift from her performative self to a more grounded version of herself.
For the moment, Moroney is enjoying the comforts of home life, spending quality time with her dog and enjoying a break from the demands of touring. This decision is part of her broader strategy to recharge and draw inspiration for her future musical endeavors.
Moroney is currently engaged in her “Cloud 9” Tour, which is set to conclude on 14 May 2027, with a final performance in Brisbane, Australia. Additionally, she is scheduled to make an appearance alongside Warren at Rolling Stone’s Musicians on Musicians live event on 23 October.
As her career continues to unfold, Moroney looks towards the future with a spirit of creativity and authenticity, eager to explore new avenues of expression in her music.
