According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Wear was on Waalew Road, near Dale Evans Parkway, when her dog, Benji, was hit by a car. In an attempt to save her beloved pet, she was subsequently struck by a Nissan Murano. Emergency responders arrived at the scene but were unable to save her, and she was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The condition of her dog following the incident is unclear at this time.

The 70-year-old driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated fully with law enforcement officials. Initial investigations indicated that neither drugs nor alcohol played a role in the accident. For a significant period, Waalew Road was closed to facilitate the investigation, with officials urging any witnesses to step forward.
Mary Lu Wear was highly regarded within her family and community. As a mother of seven, grandmother to four, and great-grandmother to nine, her loss leaves a substantial void. A GoFundMe page established in her memory describes her as the “heart of her family.” Organiser Carole Campbell reflected on Wear’s character, noting her warmth, kindness, and the positive impact she had on the lives of those around her.
Prior to her untimely death, Wear was actively involved in assisting her daughter and granddaughter in opening a restaurant in Fawnskin, approximately 40 miles from Apple Valley. Campbell emphasised that Wear’s involvement was crucial to the family venture, stating, “She was part of the heart and soul of this family endeavour. Her presence, encouragement, and love will forever be woven into its story.”
In the aftermath of this tragic incident, her family and friends are seeking to honour her memory through the donation page, which will contribute to a memorial for Wear, as well as to commemorate her two sons, Craig and Clark, who had passed away before her.
The community has expressed an outpouring of grief and remembrance for Wear, who was cherished by many. Friends and relatives highlighted her roles not only as a mother and grandmother but as a nurturing figure whose influence extended far beyond her immediate family.
Authorities are continuing to gather information regarding the incident and have urged anyone with possible insights to reach out to Deputy J. Rodgers at the Apple Valley Sheriff’s Station or contact Sheriff’s Dispatch. Those wishing to remain anonymous may also report findings to We-Tip.
As investigations continue, the family and friends of Mary Lu Wear are left to grapple with their sorrow, reflecting on her legacy of love and kindness and the profound impact she had on those fortunate enough to know her.
